Tips on landing a job on the rigs

Avoid condos like the plague right now. Even the builders can’t unload them. The government is thinking about bailing them out by setting up a loan scheme for another investment company to buy the extra stock, so the builders can’t have their money free’d up to start other housing projects. I figure there will be no money in condos for likely 20 years, because they will slowly dump off the inventory and us tax payers will pick up the difference on the failed loans.
I appreciate hearing what you heard. Around Vancouver and outskirts they will be sold but they absolutely are not selling fast. I foresee them maintaining their value around my area but I don't necessarily think they will go up much. I wouldn't buy a new condo and I wouldn't buy a very old one unless it was a well maintained all concrete building with over 1000sqft of floor space.

I'm not sure about anywhere else though. The BC govt is keeping space extremely limited and the lack of parks and SkyTrain extension are forcing people outwards. Again, I don't see them going up much and it depends on what and definitely where you bought.

Lots of companies here in Alberta hiring all the time.

Eagle, Goliath, Ensign, farm boys are major ones i see hiring new guys.

Also don't be so stuck on the rigs, there's tons of other patchwork that make as much if not more for less physical labor

Expect to be around lots of drugs especially at work when working with snubbers, driller, service rigs etc

Theres also lots of entry opportunities with work such as water transfer, testing, wireline, frac operators etc.

8 years ago i was clearing $950 a day doing water transfer with my truck just babysitting a pump watching movies lol

26yrs in the patch. Started on rigs in 1999 and currently running mud. Drilling rigs are going through 'breakup' which goes on until road bans are cleared so hiring may be on a freeze (typically around May long weekend but differs yr to yr). I personally worked for Akita Drilling for 24 of those years but I would try Precision Drilling as they take on a lot of green hands. Try to get on one of their slant super singles as they are good rigs with relatively lower physical work that when I started....trust me as you dont want to be physically destroyed by the time you get 10+yrs in

Earth Drilling
Horizon Drilling

Worked both.
Horizon was smaller sonic rigs.
Horizon had all the other biggies, super singles to triples.
Precision has some nice rigs now. Air slips, iron rough neck. Makes life a lot easier for the floor hands.

I live in Drayton Valley, Alberta. Like mentioned before it's breakup so not a great time to be looking but service rigs have been looking for green hands for the last two years non-stop. Alot of people don't last very long doing the work so there is a quite a bit of turnover thus the constant hiring.

I worked on a railroad from 19 to 24. Went back to school. Early December 1993 was my day of recognition- stay here and be crippled retired at 52 or go back to school.

No matter where you apply, showing up in person is always the way to go.
Nobody does that shit anymore. Chances are you’ll get hired on that move alone.

When I was 19, I just drove to Nisku and applied to Beaver, and PD in person. It was a Tuesday, and PD hired me on the spot. I was working a triple near GP by Wednesday. Drilling is the way to go IMO. Make better money, and it’s way more fun. As others have said, it’s break-up right now, so it’s probably tough to find work.

I will pass along a bit of advice my first push gave me “you will learn all sorts of shit, and be certified to do nothing. You will blow all the money you make now, and have fuck all to show for it. Get a trade.”

Fucker also convinced me and the other roughneck there was a women’s prison 4-5km over yonder. Had us walking in the bush all fucking night.
