sleep apnea

Over the past several weeks I’ve been waking up more than usual and I suspect it to be my apneas getting worse. I noticed as I was falling asleep, I’d often choke up as my air ways became more relaxed. Anyways, I’ve been messing around with my pressures today. Originally it was set on APAP ranging from 7.0-16.0. I adjusted it, increasing the low end threshold and decreasing to total range. Now set to 9.0-13.0 took a nap and that amount of pressure felt promising.

Anyways, a couple questions-
Do you guys notice a demand for higher pressure as your weight climbs?
Do you prefer CPAP or APAP? I’ve never tried the constant pressure but have you noticed a benefit to it?
I started out on auto but then oncw I started messing around with it I prefer the constant pressure. I do have the auto ramp on but thats just for the original starting pressure and then it increases to the set constant pressure once the set time is up. I only start a little lighter than my targeted constant pressure.

I have been dieting and dropping weight and I have been able to come down in pressure as my weight comes down. I am assuming that my airway is less restricted with less weight.

I am able to wear the mask for 7 to 8hrs a night repeatedly with a very low AHI of 0.7 or lower.

Maybe it the drugs you are taking effecting it?

Interesting. The clinic set mine up with the ramp up feature but I absolutely hated it. Disabled it immediately. With the auto pressure, do you find it just drops too low at times? Or is it simply the inconsistency?

Very well could be the case. Hard to say though. I’ve ran cycles in the past with no issues with my CPAP. However, I’ve also reached a new level of muscularity as of recent which also comes at the expense of using the most drugs I have to date.

i'm trying to figure out exactly what is "auto" and how does it know when to adjust... Can you explain?

AFAIK not all machines are equipped with this function.
Essentially auto (APAP) allows you to set a pressure range. For example, in my case i've now set mine to 9.0-13.0. It's supposed to adjust itself based on your breathing and if it's detecting you having apneas(?). I'm also not entirely clear on how the technology works so hopefully someone else can weigh in and give a better explanation.

I have on my machine a couple modes
Auto Set: I can set a max/min range

CPAP: I beleive this is constant pressure.. I usually set it to 8.8ish..

I've always used CPAP until last night I tried auto set.. I set ranges 4-10. I couldn't fall asleep on this setting last night. It felt like I wasn't getting enough air.. I might try it a few more times, but it seemed like the machine wasn't giving me enough air to the point I would get more air without it.

Maybe the auto set isn't dectecting I need more air?? I don't know..

@BanditNOLIMIT explained it perfectly, the machine uses an algorithm to monitor your breathing and change the pressure according to a range you set in the clinical settings...it is actually very first setting on that settings menu. You will find it under "Mode"

I found it sometimes was waking me up because it was just blasting.....maybe had it set too high, I dunno?
So I just thought screw it, I will try constant and I found that I liked it better.

Thats funny, the machine the clinic let me use for a trial was set on auto and I didn't like it. Felt like it was too low starting out and then I would get woken up due to it blasting out the air. clearly the range was a little off but I didn't like it anyways so I switched to CPAP and then messed with that until it was the most comfortable.
The ramp is okay, it is just a little lower than my desired CPAP pressure & only for like 10 or 15 minutes I think I have it at.
Other than that, I have the exhale settings on auto and the humidity on auto as well.
The thing works pretty damn good man, I actually want to wear it, It has changed my life in such a drastic way.

How much pressure do you have it set to for CPAP?
What you explained is right in line with what I was experiencing before increasing the lower threshold of my pressure. God knows if it’s even adjusting itself throughout the night.
For what it’s worth I slept well last night with my new settings

I’m gonna experiment with constant pressure tonight. After reading what you guys have shared, I don’t think there’s much risk.

Shoot, I just jetted out of the house, I can't remember exactly but I think 9.2.
I got it close and then would change the settings by .2 or .4.
I just kept lowering it until I was most comfortable. I have registered 0.0 AHI on 8hrs of use.
The goal is just enough pressure, only what is needed, no extra! I need to get a watch or ring so I can see my O² levels and sleep quality, I am sure its great but I really need to see.
I am juat too cheap, would rather spend the money on GH lol.

Thanks for the info man!!
Pretty crazy that you've got it dialed it that precisely.
During the process of getting it dialed in, was the AHI your sole metric of determining the right pressure?
Just curious as to what I should be tracking in order to tell if I'm using too much pressure mainly...

Truer words have never been spoken! haha

Yes but only after I got to a constant AHI or 0.8 -1. Then I thought maybe I should try to lower more and I guessed right, it lowered my AHI each time I came down in pressure.
But when I was quite a bit too high it was waking me up and it felt like I was Ace Ventura driving with my head outside of the vehicle.

Don't buy the ring, unless you pay a monthly fee it doesn't monitor shit. I got one for Christmas and was super disappointed with the way it works.
Any smart watch would be better.

Well.. I am not sure why, but I haven't been able to fall asleep with my nasal mask in a week or so.. well, I fall asleep and 10 mins later I am awake and bothered by it and can not go back to sleep so I take it off..

Same thing happened last night, but I was tired of shit sleeps so after I took it off and went back to bed, I took a puff of my pot pen.. and last night was the first time I have slept through night without waking up since at least December.

I got off a puff of pot before bed a few weeks ago... That one puff does so much for me though.

I did the fit is most important, it's gotta be loose enough so that it doesn't get sore but right enough not to leak. When I first put it on I feel like it's hard to breathe but after a little bit it feels natural. I never really want to wear it but aside from it literally extending my life it improves my sleep quality and that means gains bro.
