Any early hero of mine and many others. Took my first trip to Venice Beach because he was there but missed him by a few days. The title of the video says it all, the crazy crowd reaction you can hear is a clue to the public opinion. I've seen the whole competition and no one got anywhere near that kind of reaction, the others got some enthusiastic but polite applause. Bertil got a standing O, literally got them out of their seats. His routine starts near the beginning but if you watch to the end and see them all on stage and awarded the booing at the end was crazy too.
Laughable posing ability but beef wise he was in a class of his own. Like Tom Platz just before him he just had a shape and thickness that no-one else did, his upper back, arms and all most muscular variations were unfucking touchable. Then.
I have to admit when you see them all on stage it's a great way to see how things really advanced a decade later, legs especially. Some of these guys genetics tell me they would have been amazing if they were born 10-15 years later though.
There was lot's of talk about politics, and race as well as him being a bit of a shit disturber and maybe not who they wanted to be the face of the O at that time. He also had some woman troubles after he retired but I mean who hasn't right fellas?
