Muay Thai vs. Kickboxing: "The Legendary Fight That Changed History"

It’s actually sad to see. He had no training for this, should have just quit, trained then rematches instead of looking like a beaten dog

I remember back when I trained at Franks, Billy Chow was World Welter Weight kick boxing champ for a few years. I saw him easily take other kick boxers apart in the ring. He went to Thailand and got beaten up pretty bad by a low level guy. Soon after that, Frank started to train us in Thai boxing. A lot of training went into toughening you up. I remember that’s when that stupid sand filled skinny attached to the floor bag showed up. I loved to abuse myself and I would kick that stupid thing over and over again to toughen up my shins. Anyone who has kuckboxed or Thai boxed knows how much it hurts when you block another guys kick with your shins. Used to beat my elbows on this thing, and punch this piece of plywood attached to springs on the wall with wraps on. My shins still are bumpy, lol.

I liked Thai boxing. I always thought it was a bit ruthless, lol.

Interesting to note that even though Duke kinds trashed Thai Boxing after the fight, he later went on to become a student, and eventually a trainer, of Thai style striking. Its just too hard to deny the effectiveness of certsain aspects of Thai boxing in your striking arsenal.

Here's another good one. Even though there were no elbows and no knees allowed, the great Pete Cunningham was still unable to win - with it being ruled a draw. Even that was a gracious decision for Pete, IMO. In fact, the judge who scored it 50-45 for Pete needs his eyes examined.

If it had been full Muay Thai rules, I don't think Pete would've even gone the distance.

Very underestimated and disallowed under may rules are the Thai sweeps. A perfectly timed sweep is an effective counter and also an important part of the clinch game. Even for jiu jitsu i would rather do a sweep for my takedowns as opposed to a "judo" or "wrestling" style takedown as they require a lot more energy to set up and execute.

Do a search on Kali and Silat sweeps. A whole different world.
