Heavy training

At what age did you guys realize you can't just walk into the gym and rip a 1RM?

Tried to find my max on the back squat today and when I came back up i felt a crunch in my quad at the top outside part of my leg almost where it meets the hip. Needless to say I won't be doing that again. I just turned 34 and I've had a few injuries here and there but I really don't want another leg injury, I actually really enjoy training them!

Good news is I can walk and don't see anykind of bruising. I have some bpc 157 so I'm going to try and use for the time being.

A couple years ago for me, I will be 46 next week and now I'm more worried about just being healthy then being injured or recovering all the time, i think it hits everyone at different times, i didnt even start training until like 34 or someting lol.

I started around 18 so maybe I have too many miles on

I haven’t gotten for a 1 rep max in a year and I’m in the low 20s , fucked up my shoulder once and that was kinda it for going for heavy lifts.

Legs especially squats I work in like a 8-12 rep range just to try avoid having destroyed joints

Anything upper body apart from shoulders is like 6-10.

I will still lift heavy on the movements that feel good and dont fuck me over after. With age, you learn which movements to change out or to do differently.
Not a 1 rep guy, even tho i have done a 500 bench a few times just for ego. 6-8 reps was my sweet spot.
Now some movements are still 6-8 but some has changed to 12-20 ish.
Next year, things may change again

Late 30's.

Im 41 now. As you get older I believe your speed is first to go.

If strength is the goal you need to really prioritize your training as well as quality warmups

Realized that at age 12 cause it was drilled into me by the old bulls. Last time I ever did a single was in mid 80's and that was only to win a bet. I still think heavy and low reps is the way to go if possible but no reason to go below 5 for my goals or for anyone mainly on the hypertrophy train IMO

Honestly unless you are competing in a to strength sport Id say most of us are better off never doing 1 rep maxs. Chances of injury far out weigh benefit unless its a sport specific need. Im 49 but my idiocy kept coming back for years. Would start back training, lift heavy and low rep. Hurt myself, fucked for months. Get back and repeat. 🤷

Heavy training doesn't need to be 1 rep maxes.

You can still train in the 3-5 range safely if your body promits it.

Ive been utilizing explosive reps doing 5 sets of 3 on the bench. Using a weight around half my max.

Also doing 3x5 pause reps.

So far it feels good 😭😅
