First world problems

This is what the kids I work with tell me.
They are bored and a lot have mental illness because of the boredom, they have no freedom to really do anything anymore. Parents helicopter parent, all the stuff being taught in school about sexuality is confusing, internet gives them way too much access to everything.
Like one kid told me, a lot of kids experiment with drugs out of boredom, others overthink problems because they have nothing else.
Sitting on computers or phones and not going outside is wrecking these kids.
Plus as a society I think we have gone way overboard with the protect everyone to the point of removing their freedom thing.

I'm not educated like you guys, but I deal with teenagers and have been for 20 years and things have really changed and even the kids don't like it. They are not all accepting as everyone is led to believe. I cant tell you how many times they tell me they wish they grew up when I did so they could go out and have fun also because now you are charged for the same illegal harmless things I did as a child. So they sit in their basements playing video games and get high.

Not exactly the same but you are on to something:

I agree, they just aren't allowed to have the same fun we did... lol.. We had lots of fun..

But I think a lot of it is technology... We had NO technology so we had to come up with our own fun.. I remember bike riding, going to beach, swimming at the docks, going fishing, beach parties, field parties etc.. Kids can't do a damn thing anymore unless it involves a phone or computer. And kids can't organize a damn thing because of the same reasons.

So many kids are literally addicted to their phones, computers and video games. It's a honest to god addiction. Go to the beach, nope I'd rather play the latest call of duty all day and night.. Call some people up to go have a field party, nope I'd rather go on line and play the multiplayer game etc..

Technoology also killed what we did for fun as well. EVERYTHING makes it to the internet now.. Once its on the internet, you can't hide it and it gets shut down.. I agree parents have a HUGE part to blame in taking the joys of growing up, but a lot of the shit they have taken away they found out because of instagram etc..

I know from my job, kids can't even organize a game of tag or football anymore. Kids have been so frigging coddled that they can't do a thing for themselves anymore.. At school they can't organize anything during their break times. And of course, why would you go run around and chase a ball, its so much easier to sit in the hall on your phone and play video games that were 1000x better then ours growingup.

Sports have also essentially died in youths.. Yes some kids still play them and their's some great young atheltes, but the vast majority of kids no longer have a interest in them.. Kids these days don't even dream of growing up and being the next wayne gretsky.. Kids would rather technology.

I blame parents for kids addiction to technology. Frig I remember being told video games are too expensive so we aren't getting one. When we did get one, our parents sure as hell unplugged it and forced us outside when we played too much. And its not parent's fault, but lets be honest, a big reason kids are addicted to technology now is becuse its 10000000x better than what it was when we grew up. Even if you had the newst video game, you played it hard for a week or two then it became very boring and you stopped playing. IF you've seen the games out today they'd blow your mind.

Everyone is such a pussy now as well. I agree, its sucked the life out of being a kid/teen...

At the same time, we also got bored as hell growing up.. And yes we did smoke some pot and have some beer when we were bored. The drugs out their now are insane and everywhere and not expensive. It's a easy jump to the hard stuff these days..

It's a perfect storm it seems.....

Interesting. A few years ago my son told me he wanted to be a Youtuber. Not a ball player or fire fighter. 🤦‍♂️

daughter said the same thing
and admires these dudes that get paid for putting up content on those sites
wants to design games

asked her in what language and she said english lmfao
she has never programmed a thing
tried to explain to her she needs to learn a computer language and that is what she uses to program

Same with my grandson. I told him he could if he figured it out. Look up videos to learn how to do it because I’m not doing it for you.

He spends way too much time on you tube, so I tell him he needs to do something else.

Ok, I literally just spat coffee out reading that, haha!!

I agree with everyone here so far. Tech is really screwing kids up. Im hoping i can steer my kids in a better direction with real life as opposed to a screen. Ive already stocked up on all the good stuff I had when I was a kid. I just need to buy some cannon fuse.

But even I was hooked on video games for a while so I can understand the fun in FPS's, I loved playing Quake and COD with friends back in the day on dial up modems, and I would play GTA for hours on end and I never completed a single mission ever... just cheat codes and killing sprees.

If my kids want to play games i can get it, but if they want to watch youtube videos of other people playing games then theyre gonna get hit right upside the head and dragged outside where they will watch me take a brick to their phones. Then they can claim I gave them PTSD.

IMO our disposable throw away society encourages complaining about nothing. I see it everywhere, people always wanting something more, but they have no idea what it is. Media tells them they will find contentment in shiny beeping products and gadgets, and they are content about buying yet another useless thing which distracts them from their meaningless life for a few hours. We are taught that consumption is the answer to our ills and people are too fucking stupid to realize they've been duped by one of the big lies. I have no idea what these people will do when a real problem comes into their lives. Buy more shit I guess.

As an imperfect parent to a teenager, the one success we have had is keeping him really busy...hockey, martial arts, the lake, weights, music lessons, a part time job, helping his grand parents, walking the dog, etc....

Kids today have low attention spans and get bored and then the exploration and trouble starts. The goal is to keep them so busy they have little time to think. And that is the full time job of parents today...exhausting but true

I feel the internet and the free access to info is the bane of our youths existence. Too much info, way too soon.

The worst part about this is how ignorant people still are. I used to love it when people would ask questions on Facebook. I’d always be like “type that same question into google and see what comes up” I always felt they needed attention rather than actually needed to know something.

You can buy cannon fuse from Rusty Woods guns supplies in Vancouver. That is where I got it years ago to tie all my fireworks together. But I’m done spending $1000 on a fireworks show fir the neighbourhood and no one chips in. Took me hours to set it all up.
I still have 20 ‘ of 10 second per foot burn. If you want it pm me your address and I’ll mail it to you for free.

Right on. Ill check that out. Its not for fireworks though. When we go shooting Ill always bring some sort of appliance thats been giving me a hard time and after we swiss cheeze it Ill pack a bunch of 308 or 30-06 shells with powder to the neck, fuse em, tie em, light em and run! KABOOOM!!!

I know there are better ways to do this these days with tennorite, etc, but its how me and my dad bonded when I was a kid so Im going to pass the torch to my son... literally.

As much as I hate the idea of people watching people play video games, if you really think about it it’s no different than people watching others play sport, other than you can play or watch video games from the same chair. But kids want to watch people who are way better than they are, like good headshots or whatever.
I don’t watch any sports at all though so that’s why I feel this way. I always hated seeing fat fucks in the pub shouting at the soccer on tv and calling the players shit, like the fat cunts could run 10 meters without getting out of breath themselves.

I agree with what seems to be the general sentiment in this thread and my kids are very active as a result of those same concerns.

But.

What if we are all wrong or at the very least short sighted? What if 15 or 20 years (or whenever) from now we are all plugged into the matrix and our physical, athletic capabilities don't mean shit? What if the ones who have more experience in what we think of as zombieland are the ones more capable proficient in that world and us dinosaurs can't keep up?

I'm not worried about myself, in my mid 50's and I figure to go out on my shield somehow before this becomes an issue for me but I worry how this will affect the 20 somethings and certainly the generations that follow. The world and the way we interact with it is changing at an accelerated rate which makes it very tough to predict what traits will lead to a good life in the future.

See you in Valhalla Fuckers

Yeah but then you can get a cool service dog and take it with you in every store.

Here’s my take (a bit of a rant... but what else is new) I don’t know if I’m right, wrong or indifferent. Love newf......, another very imperfect parent...

Kids today aren’t any different than those of the past.... there’s just new and different distractions to deal with.

However its not that much different than past generations really... imagine going from horses to cars ...and radio to tv.... fuck... really thinking now.....electricity from fire or even indoor plumbing. We don’t look at those things as life altering spoils... why? Because we grew up with them. But if you didn’t?????? Think about it.

Same amount of change.... just different things. Kids ain’t different really... we are. Because these things now were either luxuries for us or things we didn’t even have because we couldn’t afford them.

You’ve just been smart enough to understand that you need to give your kids structure and introduce them to things that will teach them valuable life lessons. And ultimately that you can’t be a standby parent. Nor can you be a helicopter parent ( I hate that I used that term... but it paints it well). It’s so hard to give your kids the opportunity to fail. But without allowing them to fail you rob them of the opportunity to solve their problems. If kids don’t have the opportunity to step out by themselves into the area and be vulnerable... they can’t ever be independent of us. And that’s a problem. Kids need to fail.... as hard as that is to watch as a parent. You never want them to experience your heartbreaks or big mistakes.... but they have too.

This doesn’t diminish your accomplishments....you deserve a hats off... you got it.....unfortunately....this is rare for parents these days. Our kids are not our kids... we are their parents. Crazy? Maybe but just consider what I say.....Our job is to help guide them to give them the skills they need to thrive. If we rob them
Of that by solving all their problems for them we create all the things that are wrong with current society.

Stand proud. You did what you were supposed to do!

This thread doesn’t have a “best answer” feature, (something I haven’t quite figured out yet) you really nailed it here..

Maybe we’re being that old crotchety guy that we always rolled our eyes at when we were young.

only if posted as a question is the best answer feature available

I know you as mod see the button for best answer when there is a question and I see it
do you the members see it when you respond to a question?

for instance in this thread do any members see the button best answer????
