Nootropics knowledge anyone?

i was looking at the andrew huberman brain stack as i do shift work and i find it tough sometimes during a day shift to stay sharp.
this includes
Alpha GPC
L-Tyrosine
L-Phenylalanine
Rhodiola Rosea
Then obviously Glutamine, Creatine and Omega 3 I already take

Not exactly one concrete “nootropic” but allegedly these can help with alertness and decreasing perceived fatigue. Anyone have any input?
I liked having alpha GPC in my preworkout blend. I feel like I was more ''locked in'' my workout. Studies suggest it can improve strength, particularly in explosive movements like squats and bench press so that's neat.

Years ago @Bagua gave me a mantra that's been stuck in my head for long time -"Higher consciousness through harder contact" . I have had more than a fair share of that in my life, lots of serious concussions mostly back in the days when we just sucked it up and got back in there cause we didn't know better or were too macho for our own good. Some long recoveries. I wish I had thought to mention that at the start of the thread, might have influenced some of the input. I do think it may have slightly lowered my cognitive level over the long term but I haven't had one in well over a decade now and been at a pretty stable level for a while.
That was a long time ago, my friend. Now, I would ask you to focus on ikigai.

@gondar1 I feel your pain...

About 10 years ago I was doing so badly with memory, congiitive function etc I was reffered to a neurologist. I failed the montreal cognitive memory test in stellar fashion lol.. I hated my life back then because how bad my memory was and how slow my congitiion had decline.. I went from sharp as a tack with photogenic memory and a memory that was better than any other person I came across, to just a mushy slow brain..

I'm doing much better now, but my memory and cognitive function truly never came back all the way..

There is parallels to when I was teens/20's and being jacked, strong as fuck, sharp as a tack and memory like an elephant..

To my 40's when I see young jacked strong guys.. In my head I miss those days so much and when I work out around them, yes I'm still bigger and stronger, but in my head I just have this flashing sign saying "man I wish I still had my body in my 20's than I could really show them whose boss".. At work, I deal with young sharp minded colleges.. and the same thing goes through my head "man I wish I still had the brain I had when I was in my 20's... you wouldn't be laughing "..

Growing old just sucks dick..

I think what makes it worse for me is my father had the WORST memory and cognitive function.. It was like he was getting dementia in his 40's.. it was terrible.. I really hated dealing with him when I was a teen because of it.. and now everytime I forgot where I put something or stop mid thought and just have a complete brain shut down, I just think I'm him.. I hate it.

Either way.. I really started to focus on how to save my brain.. I did lots of reading, lots of trying..
1) keep the brain active.. reading books, playing cards, chess etc.. I also think learning new hobbies helps, but nothing works better to keep my brain in best shape I can other than reading..

2) cardio.. I can't recall the research or reasoning, but cardio really does help.

3) Sugar a.. Sugar is poison for the brain.. Carbs aren't bad, but those really good carbs are the only ones I reach for now when I need carbs.

4) vtimains and minerals.. anything that deals with free radicals.. magnesium, beta carotene, vitamin D, fish oil, b12, zinc, vita min C, etc..

5) Sleep is so damn important.. I swear not sleeping great for a few months does lasting damage.. Seems the older we get the less we can actually sleep.. I swear if I get 7 hours of sleep its a miracle.. I used to fall asleep and not wake up until alarm is ringing.. now it seems like I haven't slept through a whole night straight in years.

6) deal with stress.. some stress is good for brain, but the nasty stress, the prolonger stress etc.. that shit is just awful.

7) avoid the booze and pot.. I have used tiny amounts of pot to help sleep.. I need to get off it even though its the tiniest amount.

I know L-Theanine is often taken with caffeine for a synergetic effect. If you've tried L-Theanine before, do you take it with caffeine? If so, what amounts did you take to get nootropic effects?

I take 3-4 grams of L-theanine with my coffee about 45 mins before I lift.. I can tell you beyond a doubt, the L-theanine helps my workout.. It keeps me focussed.. It stops me from hitting a wall and wanting to just go home.. it helps me start my workout with motivation.. it helps me a lot..

Have you tried DHEA? Many TRT clinics push it alongside TRT because of its cognitive benefits. I’ve read many studies though and say it’s inconclusive. I did not notice any benefit when I tried it, but then I don’t have any cognitive issues.

I took it for 2-3 years straight at one point. It absolutely lowers cortisol significantly. My BW proved that. I only stopped taking it because it seriously reduced my SHGB.

Man.. I took DHEA for a few years.. I agree with you on lowering cortisol.. better pumps.. and I have a lot of job stress, so I liked that it dealt with cortisol.... and lots of research I read convinced me it was worth it..

I had a doctor tell me I should pick TRT or DHEA because studies show when taken together they cause a increase risk of cancer... fucking whack job dr I think..

I only stopped because my benefits wouldn't cover it and for some reason it just got quite pricey...

Not sure if its been mentioned.. but Creartine in older age has been proven to be benfical for the brain..

And read about lions mane.. I've been taking it for about 6 months every day.. I don't feel like it's done anything.. but I'm wondering if it helps detoritation.. You can get cheap lions mane from one of those bullk supplement places.

I feel like 3-4g of L-theanine is a lot lol I think most capsules are like 250mg each.

This is exactly what I need. It’s so difficult to get my butt in the gym. But once I get going, I have no more issues. It’s the activation energy that I need.

I thought so too. But @animal-inside is a big man. He most likely played around with doses to find out what works the best for him. I will say that 500mg did fuck all for me. Had to be 1g+.

Very true about creatine. Add that to your list @gondar1 if you don’t already take it. I take around 10-12g daily. Doesn’t matter if I’m injured and not lifting. I’ll still take it. Along with 10g if glutamine. @animal-inside I wanted to give lion’s mane a try for a long time. But I feel discouraged because you’re not the only one who said they didn’t think it was working.

Sorry.. forgot... been reading a LOT about nicotine.. Start googling nicotine's positive affect on protecting the brain.. It's crazy..

I read some testing is being done on micro dosing of nicotine for brain health.. Good reading
I don’t about micro dosing but I mega dose nicotine throughout the day with those liquid juices. I use it cuz it helps me with focus. But just as with anything, you will develop a tolerance. If I don’t smoke my nicotine 20mg/ml vaporizer for 20 mins, I start to feel it. If I don’t have nicotine for 2 hours, you can see me get irritated and short tempered.

Quitting now will just throw me off and will give me foggy brain for 6 weeks. I know it because I’ve done it. At the moment I can’t afford to lose weeks. I have to be sharp everyday. That is one thing I recommend to everyone. If you’ve developed a habit and you’re about to go cold Turkey, think whether or not you have the luxury to be off your game at the present time. You could easily ruin relationships and throw away everything you’ve worked so hard to achieve. I speak from experience. I’ll say it again: mistakes have been made 🤦🏻‍♂️

As I said, I don't feel much, but I'm curious if it has preventative properties. Might not see any benefit at all except less cognitive decline over time??

I'm really amazed at the studies of nicotine's affect on the brain..

I've thought a lot about it, all the old guys I know who smoke are still sharp as a tack and I would say they experinced less cognitive disorders like alzimers, memory loss, brain fog, MS etc..

The research companies are in the works for developing a mico dose tab that apparently is so low its non addtictive.. I'm really interested based on all the stuff I have read.

They studied nicotine for adhd too but stopped the study. It has promise because it's stimulating effects while also calming. I don't know why they stopped the study but maybe because of nicotine bad rap, and i think pharma couldn't patent it because it's so freely available

When you quit look into N acetyl L tyrosine it could help balance out catecholamines and I think specifically dopamine

Apolgies for the absence, silly of me to start a thread when I knew I wouldn't be arond for a bit. I've read it all and done a little more research.
It has occoured to me that cost will be a factor, with that in mind I think i should get myself up to speed in that area before I get too deep lest I get my lil heart set on something that will not be affordable for me.

So, maybe a tricky question - It seems like a grey area so please respect the board rules here about sources meaning don't mention any ugl's in or any items that may be questionalble legally in this thread but if you have a suggestion on best bang for the buck sources please let me know. One thing I am considering already because I have injested it before is the theanine. It's not the best fit for my stated goals but I found a great looking value on amazon for Naka Brand. I do use some of their Nattokinase but honestly have no idea about the brands quality.

I'll be back.
(Do it! Say it out loud in Arnold's voice, you know you want to)

Geez had anothet thought.. have you checked your thyroid numbers lately?

I want to say my TSH was around 2.5 and my doctor gave me synthoird.. it made a big difference with my cognitive funtion. I wasn't supposed to get the thyroid meds because my TSH wasn't high enough, but he said "if it helps, it helps"

This list is a mix of my personal experience plus what my reading of the research indicates most effective for improving verbal fluency. I'm only including ones that I've personally tried for an extended period.
In order of most effective to least,

Most immediate effect
Quality sleep is number one.
Racetams (Piracetam, Aniracetam, etc.)
Noopept
Ketogenic Diet

Long term permanent benefit
Bacopa Monnieri
Citicoline (CDP-Choline, anything that increases acetylcholine)
Lion’s Mane Mushroom
Meditation

If deficiencies are caused by stress
L-Theanine
Rhodiola Rosea

Cost effectiveness wise, it would be good sleep, ketones and meditation.

If you want immediate results then noopept or racetams. But tolerance builds quickly so I don't know how cost effective they really are.

I can provide cites if you're interested.

Very true. Hormones are king for cognition
