My wife and I are looking at getting a puppy. We are trying to decide between a golden retriever and a lab. I was eying the cane corsos but they are huge and can be tempermental from what I heard.

Anyone here own a dog/dogs and if so what are your experiences with the breed both positive and negative? Post pictures if you have them too.

if this is your first dog do not get a cane corsos
take @Brbpuppy 's advise and get a lab

Love Boxers....easy to train, very obedient, great with kids, goofy personality, great with other dogs. good size dog...about 80lbs of solid muscle. Down side for some people - they are athletes so high energy and need toooooons of exercise (not an issue for my family) and they don't do well if left alone (my wife works from home so no issues).

Don't get a temperamental or strong willed breed unless you are experienced handler. not fair to you or the dog.

I’ve had many dogs mostly Pitbulls and American Bully’s because they’re most commonly in shelters and likely to be put down. I always go the rescue route for a dog regardless of breed. Breed is less important to me than letting another dog die due to shelter overcrowding. The spot you give to a bought dog is the death of a dog in a shelter. I’d suggest you search the shelters and look at actual temperament of the dog not just what a certain breed may be like. In my experience temperament is truly an individual Dog trait and not based on what breed you get or how a breeder markets their bloodline.

I have a male pure bred st Bernard and a female st Bernard/Great Pyrenees mix.
They are both five yrs old. We think the male is inbred. He is seriously fucked in the head. He is very friendly but extremely stupid. Cant train him at all. The prick literally ripped a hole through the side of my fucking house two weeks ago because he wanted outside. Through the wall, insulation, plywood, steel mesh/plaster and siding. Then dug a tunnel cause was in basement. This was after bashing a barricade down with his head that i put up to keep him out of that area cause i saw he was digging at it.
Point is, if getting a purebred, get it from a registered breeder with papers. Having a 160lbs autistic dog sucks.

Wow man, that's unreal.

BunnE and I are on our 4th golden I swear they are hairy ppl. If you go this route be careful and choose your breeder wisely for they may have genetic issues that can add up to a lot suffering heartbreak and $ but they are great family members ,kind, smart, gentle.

What about leaving a dog at home while at work? I work early from 530am to 130pm so it might only be for 3-4 hours after my wife leaves for work. Is that reasonable or not? I feel bad when dogs are stuck at home all day and they have to take a piss or shit. Maybe I am wrong but what do the people with dogs here think about that?

3-4 hours isn't bad, they get used to it. As long as they get their attention and exercise shortly after. If you're pushing them over 6-8 hours alone everyday, thats not fair in my opinion.

Labs are great dogs, but any dog can be great.
It takes an owner willing to put in the work and learn how a dogs mind works. They are simple animals once you figure them out.

please take it to obedience class. If you have kidsit is good family time. You all need to be on the same page when training a dog. This little bit of work that the dog an family will enjoy will create a good dog and a happy environment for it since it will know what’s expected of it and you will know how to teach it manners and discipline it properly.

My lab does great in the house alone, usually find her asleep on our bed. But she’s walked twice a day and has a large yard to run in.
we got her when my youngest son was 6 months old. He’s now 5 and they are inseparable. She really is his dog. He used to crawl all over her and not once did it even seem to phase her.

Please listen to @3ml - If you don't have a lot of experience and are not going to be the pack leader in all situations (I don't mean be abusive or mean as owners like that I would like to have a few minutes alone with) do not get a cane corso. I train dogs in obedience and for personal protection and attend a class once a week with my Bouvier which is filled with dogs that were abused, are human or dog aggressive and we rehabilitate them to have an even temper. Cane corso's are incredibly strong and can do an immense amount of damage if they are not socialized, trained, and given a job to do.
Whatever dog you get, take it to puppy class and obedience class like 3ML recommended, it is fun and will make your life better with your dog. Most dogs like training and work and the bond you create with training can't be broken.
My Bouvier was a handful and if we were not strict with him he would run the house - he is now 130 lbs of muscle and is a trained protection dog. We love him as he is part of our family but he is strong willed and if he was with the wrong family, he would have been put down. It took 100 plus hours or training to get him to be a balanced protection dog as he had issues.
If you don't have a lot of experience with dogs labs and Goldens are wonderful pets but keep in mind if your not prepared to walk your dog everyday rain or snow, socialize your dog as any dog can be aggressive including both those breeds, and aren't 100% committed don't get a dog.
I am not saying this is you but so many people buy dogs on emotions or without thinking about all the times the puppy will crap in the house, the vets and food bills, if they aren't exercised and trained they might dig through your walls (my rescue Border Collie did that before lol).
All dogs can be wonderful and some are just a handful but they just want leadership, love, and stability.
Do you want an active dog to go hiking and train or just a nice family pet that doesn't need a lot of exercise?
I will shut up now, if it isn't evident I love animals and especially dogs as they give you unconditional love and will give their life to protect you if you ask them to with no thought of their own mortality.
Good luck whatever you get.

Big fan of my coonhounds. Great hunting and working dogs. Very smart if you have the time and resources to train them. These are dogs that definitely need to be given tasks and challenged though, so getting one as a lap dog would not do it justice. Seeing them accomplish goals you set up for them and help them achieve is very rewarding.

got a lab and a st bernard. Both are awesome and extremely friendly. The lab was worse as a puppy with destroying things. Think of marley and me and thats my dog as a pup. He ate a pool table, lazy boy chair and 20 or so pairs of shoes. Also had a love of eating socks
You can hire good trainers to come to your place and train you to train them. Its not a lot of money in the long run and its worth it

I had three poodles, but am down to one. 7 lbs of pure intensity.
Two staffies and a bull terrier prior to my poodles. You need to make a commitment to training and exercise if you get any athletic type of dog. All three were great with kids and protectors of the family.

I'm personally not a huge believer in a certain breed being temperamental, its all on you if you don't build a solid bond, give it a job or allow it to burn off adequate energy everyday, yah your going to have problems. A dog needs structure. I have a saint bernard a 3 month old English male mastiff and just recently lost my great dane. All good dogs, the puppy is young he's in training so at times can be a shit disturber but he will be good he's catching on to commands very well, he knows who alpha of the house is and does challenge me at times I just don't let him have his way. Once i track down the right harness for him he's gonna learn weight pulling jist for fun and burn energy. It's really all on you, if your really not that into it I wouldn't suggest a high energy dog/breed. I like the cane corso and am looking to build the pack larger its a toss up between, rotti , cane or bull mastiff.
