Why working for time and a half on a stat holiday is bullshit.

Quite a few years ago I was still under the myth that time and a half was awesome. If I was making $15hr well now I’m making $22.50! Sweet!

A tutor at college opened my eyes in a “errr fuck, why did I never think of it like that?!” Kind of way.

I was just trying to explain to my girlfriend over text why she actually worked for half pay when she worked on Monday. She couldn’t wrap her head around it “but I basically made $30hr” she said.

The simplest way I could explain it to her was like this.

If someone makes $10hr and works 8hrs that is $80. If they get stat pay and stay home they get $80. If they work for time and a half they get $120. But 80 of that they would have gotten anyway staying at home. So that person just worked 8hrs for $40. So they made $5 an hour.

What do you think of this? Have you known this the whole time or is it also a “wtf?!” Moment for you too?
The wool is being pulled over the eyes of so many people. It’s like a big legal scam.

you still get paid the stat if you work it or not, so in reality when you work a stat you are making 2.5x your regular pay when you count the stat pay too

Yes SOME people do. I do now because I’m in a real career type job but I never did working a mall job when I was younger. Shitty jobs don’t pay like that. Maybe it depends on the province also. My girlfriend said she was better off working for time and a half because if she stays home for the holiday she gets no stat pay at all.

Well the federal stat list, which thanksgiving is one of, would apply to all provinces. Some holidays are provincial stats only ie Family day and civic holiday are examples. Those may or may not be paid by your company. BUT the fed ones are mandatory to be paid. I've worked a lot of different jobs and always got paid stat pay plus time and a half if i had to work it. This included working in about 5 different provinces. I'd say your company fucked you over.

Yeah I get paid full pay for the day (10hrs regularly time) then if I work it I get x1.5 regular pay.

To get paid for a stat I believe you have to work 15 of the last 30 days. So if you only worked part time you could definitely get hosed.

typically for part time, in ontario anyway, they add up your hours for your last 20 shifts and divide by 20 . This gives them an hourly average that would be your stat pay.

I think it also depends on the industry. The service industry seems to have its own rules. Before I became a mechanic I worked it pretty much exclusively. From restaurants to retail, lawn care, and I was also a mover. I have worked many many holidays and not once received double time and a half. I never even heard of that until I came to the oilfield as a mechanic. The same goes back home in England, all restaurants, retail and one bowling alley. My buddy works at a brewery and pretty much works every holiday except Christmas. I asked him about stat pay and it’s the same for them. Time and a half.

We pay double for stat holidays if the people work.

Most customers don’t want to pay it so it’s usually not an issue.

Really depends on where you work. If I work a stat (12hrs) shifts. I get time and a half for the first 8 and then double time the last 4. Then I bank the 12hr day to take off paid at reg time at a later date. So really my 12 hours turns out to be 32 hours.

companies can always pay more they just cant pay less than what is listed in the labour code as that is the minimum standard by law.

I don’t know if it changed but in Alberta you got paid for the stat holiday, then if they worked they got 11/2 times. Now if they didn’t normally work the day the stat was on they didn’t get the stat holiday pay, but got paid 1 1/2 times if they worked that day. Now you had to be there for 3 months before this took effect. Since my shop was closed on Mondays and most stats fall on a Monday I didn’t have to pay for the stat day to anyone.
Now Ontario is different, you have to pay the regular stat pay no matter what and there is no 3 month waiting period. If they work the stat they get 1 1/2 times.
In both provinces if you work that day you get 2 1/2 times (paid day, plus 1 1/2 if you work it). If you are not they you got hosed.

In alberta. In Trades and construction industry I have never gotten paid for holidays. You get 6% vactaion and 3.6% holiday pay on every check.. it works out to be way more than getting paid for holidays

Used to get paid like that also before I decided to work for the cheapest company I've seen yet. Used to love it think i was getting 3.1 or 3.2% and it was based of my gross for that pay period which definitely added up once you started piling the OT on.

I'm self employed and get paid a day rate, I don't get anymore whether it's a holiday or not....except on Christmas Day, the company I work for will give us a double day rate on Christmas Day.
