sleep apnea

So... I'm reading about auto adjusting machines.. Do they literally do all the adjusting automatically? So I wouldn't need the clinic to set up or adjust it ever?

My boyfriend got a CPAP and that probably saved our couple lol. We couldn't even sleep in the same bed anymore cause his snoring got out of hand. I'd have to hit him mid sleep and I got scared I was going to be busted for domestic violence :ROFLMAO:

No. What it means is it’ll adjust within a range set on the machine. The full range is between I can’t remember exactly but like a low number like 5-20. That’s the air pressure and it’ll go back and forth between the two numbers. It’s a huge range and most will find anything under a certain number almost hard to breathe and the over a certain number air leaks. If you go through the proper route they would obviously set that up for you. But it’s super easy. Within a night or two you will find out pretty quickly what your range is. You want to narrow it down where it’s comfortable but also not blasting too much where air leaks(the machines will tell you if there’s a leak). For example I got mine and I fiddled around with it the first night and found I was good around 8-18. Then after a couple nights the machine will give feedback. So I moved it down to 8-15. Currently I’m at 11.5-15 cause I’m heavier. It’s very easily and is just a push of a button.

When I bought mine I was worried I’d not know what to do or how to set it up. It’s literally that easy.

I don't know about the adjusting ones, but the ones you adjust yourself are a joke to adjust. As I said I just kept turning it up until I had leaks without really tightening the mask down to the point of uncomfortable, then back down a bit.

Key is you want the max pressure you can use without inconveniences like leaking or sinus pressure.

I never snore now ever. My wife couldn't sleep the first couple weeks because I was so quiet.

Found out today my insurance will not cover it because I need to be considered moderate, not mild.. irritating that they based this off wearing a ring for one night.. I can not believe we sleep the same every night. When the sleep consultant called me, they didn't ask "how did you feel like you slept the night you wore the ring" or "do you feel like you slept like you usually do when you wore the ring"... A piss off but I will continue on my health journey.

Either way, I'll be buying direct since its not covered.

@Sorbate I checked kijiji alberta and any machine that doesn't appear to be quite old is listed for 600-1200$. A few ads post pictures of the cost reciept for the machine and they are $2,000-3,000.. I'm guessing they bought from the clinic and paid 2x more than they should and therefore when they list it for 900$, its a fair price as its less than half of what they paid. Either way, I don't think I'll buy used to save just 5-10%.

I think I will go wit this model.. If I pick up the complete kit in this link I would have everything I need? I can buy the same kit, but without the mask. and then pick a mask.. Is this a better option?

I went and did overnight sleep test (again. Wife insisted LoL)... They diagnosed me with "mild" sleep apnea. I'm going to shop to get machine etc. They said gov't pays for part of it and work benefit the rest. They said I must purchase at registered shop(?).

what government? Province or federal?

I emailed the clinic and asked is one night of testing regardless of the night chosen indicitive of how I sleep every night.. I'm curious what they are going to tell me..

I actually asked if I could pay out of pocket for another night with the ring to do it one more time and see if the reuslts are the same..

Don't ask me why, but my wife rarely tells me that I snore.. she used to tell me more often about 10 years ago.. but it wasn't even that often.. When I told her I had to do a sleep appena test she just unloaded on me about how much I snore, how she hears me choking in my sleep etc.. she wasn't mad but she just let it out about how I sleep.. I had no idea I was sleeping like that lol. I did loose a pile of body fat about 4-5 years ago and she said it made a big differance... I bet when I was 300lbs 5 years ago I would have hit that magic number of 15..

Well that sucks about the price.
Can you buy a machine without a script?

Buy the machine with this mask if you can. Trust me this one is the most comfortable IMO. And I bought like 10 different masks to try. I find its the cheapest on Amazon

Yup you can buy them without the script. Just got to pay for it yourself. I have a script right beside me, but my insurance company said the script alone isn't enough, I need to submit a sleep study confirming i'm 15 or worse.

i like that style but with the nubs that go in to your nose, not sure what model it is off the top of my head. I found there was too much leakage with the one that just rests on your nose. I'm guessing its due to the structure of my nose

The Resmed 10 is a great machine.
The least invasive mask you can buy is a P10, its a nasal pillow mask and one small strap around the back of your head. The N30 that @Sorbate shared is a great idea with the swiveling hose attachment on the top of your head but I found there to be too much contact to my head on my temples and the top of my head.

I thought I would be a mouth breather and have to wear the mask covering both but it was suggested to try the nasal pillow first. My mouth almost feels suctioned closed, no mouth taping or anything needed.
Cheapest place I found is http://cpapsupply.ca
The dude that runs it is fantastic and ships immediately.
You can get a brand new ResMed 10 there for $950.

I would not want to wear a full face mask if I didn't have to.

I have that one. But not the full face mask, just the one that covers my giant schnoz.....probably full face for some folks....lol!

Hi @animal-inside;

Sorry you're having these issues. also, to anyone else fighting this without awareness or help. The system is pretty slow and sleep apnea is very serious and affects many people in many ways.

I wonder if they should check you again and get you when you sleep in each position or with your own pillow, etc. since it might have just been mild that nigtht based on a variety of things. You might get different results since you seem to know how bad it normally is under normal conditions at home.

I have severe obstructive sleep apnea while sleeping on my back, front, and sides and restless limb which makes it worse since i have trouble keeping it on at night.

I now have a ResMed 11 which is a CPAP / APAP machine and use the Nose Pillows. It connects to an app and gives you immediate details when you wake up.

I bury myself in pillows and blankets and feel like I could sleep underwater with that thing.

A few hours with that is better than twelve hours and two naps without it.

Good luck,

OD

The one you suggested I own, but for some reason the inserts make my nose hurt. I bought it because I do find the one I use to be annoying sometimes with the shit that goes over your head.

Maybe I need to give it another go.

Btw @animal-inside if you get a machine, wait till you buy a bunch of masks, I’ll send you the ones I don’t use (after I sanitize them in quat sanitizer). Might as well save hundreds of dollars.

I have a full mask, the nose pillow mask combo, dream wisp nose mask. I think I might have something else. I kinda bought 1 of everything, lol.

Yeah that was the best part, can sleep with the blanket over your face and fart without fear, lol.

It is good to have several masks to choose from. As mentioned, I use the nose pillow one but if you get a cold and your nose gets stuffed up then it's good to have some type of face one.

The ResMed app (hopefully others as well) can also pull all sorts of useful and critical info. from smart watches and combine it with your CPAP / APAP machine for review and comparison which is handy. It can also send it to the Sleep Study people and Doctors, Sleep Specialists, etc.

For sure, the pillows hurt my nostrils too for the first couple nights. Try a little vasaline or a drop of lube on each of them lol.
They did soften up a bit after a few uses and no there is zero irritation or pain.

Im actually surprised they did a diagnosis with only a ring...
Like you're talking a ring worn on your finger.
It took me six attempts to get enough data when I got tested.....that testing consisted of an oxygen sensor clipped to my index finger, nasal canula like how they administer oxygen and a freaken belt with a sensor around my chest. Like who the hell can sleep with all that crap on.....took me six tries, I kept rippin it off in my sleep and I would wake up with it on the floor.
As far as I knew that was the gold standard for testing, perhaps you can get retested with that contraption and get a worse result and maybe into moderate and get it covered.
