sleep apnea

At 320lbs I would have 86 apnea.events per hour. I'm a little over 250 ATM and I sleep pretty good a couple months ago at my peak weight last cycle I had to use my CPAP machine and I'd still be using it if I didn't break my mask a couple weeks ago.

I tried the nasal mask last night for the first time..
Wow.. game changer..

I was shocked at how loose the straps could be, but mask still sealed.

Mask EASILY sealed, no fucking around trying to get a full mask to sit and seal properly..

It was a LOT easier falling asleep with the nasal mask compard to the full mask.. It just feel more natural.. It never felt normal with the full mask and to be honest, sometimes It felt suffocating and I would almost want to panick because something was covering my mouth/nose.. like someone was trying to kill me by placing a hand over mouth/nose.

The only difficult thing with the nasal mask seems to be starting the night with clear nostrils.. I have a couple different sprays/sniffing things to clear nostrils before throwing it on, but I hope once this tiny cold is gone I won't need them.

Vic’s vaporub has inhalers. You take like 3 snorts in each nostril and you get pretty cleared out. Then I find the machine keeps you clear.

I got a similar product off amazon.. I tried it last night and first wiff I was like "yup... vics vapour rub".... childhood flashback memories of getting that stuff smeared on my chest and under my nose before bed..

AS a parent, when my kids are congested and night time cough, I smear it on their feet and cover with a sock, and smear it on their chest/back..

Its great for toenail fungus as well, you just need to apply it 4 times a day and it works better than any prescription medication.

So much better then what I started with lol..

How'd you sleep?

First night was good
4 apneas
Actually felt rested

last night only got 3h with the machine wasn’t able to bare with it

I was less tired and got annoyed compared to the previous day where I knocked out with it no problem

monitoring the leaks
Not sure what to look for exactly

ya that's what I went through.. I'd have a decent night, then the next night I couldn't stand the mask or pulled it off after a shitty 1-2 sleep.

You have full face mask right? I know when I first started using the machine I had a full mask and I felt like "I can get used to this"... but in the end, I couldn't... Feels so much better for me to use a nasal mask.. IT's been 2 nights, but it's honestly night and day different for me.. I slept 7 full straight hours last night with the mask on at pressure 9.4... bettee than any night with a full mask.. I only woke up because my hose had water in it and ws gurgling.. I'll up the pressure a bit more and turn the humidty down a bit toight.

Update..

The nasal mask is amazing.. I can't get over how easily it seals and how loose I can have the straps and it still stays sealed all night. I also love how it doesn't feel like a hand over my mouth. It doesn't take me long to fall asleep either.. with the mask it was a struggle just to fall asleep.

All that being said, I wake up about 5 hours into my sleep without fail. When I wake up, it feels like its hard to breathe in and out. Seems harder to breathe out than in..... I try to fall back asleep, but I just can't. I try, but end up taking the mask off and instantly I can breathe.

I'm not sure if I'm still in the process of adjusting or if there's something else I should try to adjust.. last night I turned the pressure up from 9.2 to 9.8 and didn't find a difference.. I tried over 10 with the nasal mask, but it didn't feel good and went back to 9.2 where it felt better.

You probably mentioned it further back in the thread, but which model mask did you settle on?

Came with 3 different sizes for your actual nostril.. I have a giant head and a nose that matches.. the big one fit me perfect.

Good stuff. I remember testing that one when I got my machine. Couldn’t seem to get a good seal on my nostrils. The one that actually goes in the nostrils works much better for me.

Anyways glad you found one that feels good.

In regard to the difficulties breathing, is there still water in the reservoir at that point? I’ve noticed if my reservoir dries out, it becomes harder to breathe. Probably not your issue, just thought I’d throw it out there.

Taking the mask off after you wake in the early morning is a normal thing. When my wife’s alarm goes off at 5 am, I get woken up, take the mask off take a pee and go back to bed without it on.

Thing is now you are getting 5 hours of good sleep, even if the other couple hours is sleep interrupted with apnea, I think of it as it doesn’t matter and I got 5 good hours.

I wouldn’t worry about it. There will be times where you will sleep all night thru. Just go with it, if you are done after 5 hours, just take it off and don’t feel guilty.

make sure you have some secaris on hand using the nasal mask. nothing more annoying than a dry nose. the humidifier should help but doesn’t hurt to be prepared.

Ya, the resevoir is still half full usually.. Funny a full tank wouldnt last a night with the full mask for me.

My machien turns off if the resevoir is dry.

I have to put ice in mine. If it's not cool air, I feel like I'm suffocating.

If that feeling is really bad, I use some nose spray to really open up my sinuses. You just have to be careful with the otc sprays....they can be addictive. Using a corticosteroid one rather than the others is allegedly less habit forming.
