My First Cycle: What I've Learnt So Far and What I'd Like to Know

Awesome information! Thank you! I'd seen a lot of guys get puffed up and sloppy. Invariably they were badly misinformed frat boys or that general type.

I figured that the fella running very long cycles competes and is very experienced. That's next level. I'd love to hear his nutrition recommendations. One of the things that this cycle has been good for has been developing far more nutritional discipline.

Regarding harm-reduction supplements, I'm taking chitosan for cholesterol. My last bloods were good in terms of cholesterol. Milk thistle for hepatic harm reduction. The bloodwork is through a service offering different bloodwork. For PEDs, they'll provide harm reduction advice and I haven't any clue where he got the "10% of patients" data. It's exactly as you said: harm reduction advice based on what I'm on and bloods. They won't provide cycle or PCT advice, nor will they prescribe. Maybe he's deriving that data based on what's reported to him or at his clinic in Southern Ontario.

I get TRT trough my GP. An endocrinologist initiated it several years ago, starting with oral test undecanoate, then test cyp. I switched to test E after a drug shortage, preferred it and stuck with it. The strange part is that despite both being very similar, I found that test cyp boosted libido when serum levels peaked 3 days or so after injection.

I've been training after becoming burnt out from overworking during the pandemic. for several months leading up to the cycle. First step was getting nutrition discipline again. I'd started training shortly after test cyp was initiated. I can't remember how many years ago. I want to say 2016. The pandemic and relocating 750 km right as the first lockdown hit wrecked my shit. I was overworking like crazy to keep us going and became burnt out. Nutrition, training and everything was off kilter. Sorted that all out last August. Started training again. I keep a log of every time I dose, how much was taken, nutritional intake (protein, calories, carbs, fats), when bloods are done and any red flags or side effects that appear.

I really want to get the most from this in the safest way possible. I like my progress thus far and it's great to build discipline again. I've had very noticeable strength gains and like the changes in definition. I like dryer, more defined gains. Those are, and will be, my overall goal although a little bit of bulking up wouldn't hurt either.

I really appreciate all of the information that I've been getting thus far. This has been a huge learning experience and with time, I'll keep learning and finding out what works best for me.
Thank you for the response - appreciated. Why I asked if you got stronger and how long you lifted is because I have seen some catastrophic injuries with people who only started lifting with gear or just a year in and jumped on gear and got much stronger. Your muscles get larger and stronger but your ligaments and tendons can't keep up and get torn off the bone, or partially torn. The sound is awful, a very loud pop when someone is doing flat benches is one I have heard many times. That gent ripped the tendon that attached his chest muscle properly completely off the bone. He wasn't training long and jumped on a cycle and was getting too strong too fast.
There is a lot of info here for safety mitigation and I suggest you read them. I wrote a few and so did others I'm sure. Read some of the double blind studies I posted in the health section please. I also put up a thread called harm reduction on a budget or something along those lines for folks who don't want to spend 100's of dollars. For example - Carleson's fish oil or a quality fish oil is imperative for a multitude of reasons and it is expensive and you have to take a lot if your BP / cholesterol go up, reduces inflammation, helps sore joints etc. As for liver protection - nothing wrong with milk thistle but that is the organ I studies the most and tried about every known supplement/product for keeping liver enzymes down and healing my mild fatty liver (not from gear) and did but it took a lot of trial and error and money.
I would try a few supplements and get blood work done, if no luck try a few more and pay for my own blood work. You get the picture - but you only have one liver, two kidneys, one heart and mess them up and you won't be worrying about growing anymore. You will be concentrating on just getting your health back.
There is a ton of good info here if you go to the health section but happy to list what worked for me, if it would help you. It also depends what you are taking as for a new guy I think orals are a complete waste. If you compete - they are a necessity but for the average Joe who wants a better physique - orals will give you short term gains you won't keep or that has been my experience. Lower dosed/longer cycles - note lower dosed and I mean 250-300 mg per week and you will most likely keep a lot of it. Primo is a fairly weak steroid but it is a safer one and it the side effects are all positive for me but keep in mind I am referring to adding 100-150 mg a week on TRT.
There is a thread I started ages ago called 'what did you eat today'. I have been periodically posting in that thread as has @BanditNOLIMIT, @Jussik, @Sorbate, @Oldguyjiujitsu - sorry if I missed anyone who posts there a lot to share with the group here. I would spend some time reading it and you can see how dedicated some people are. In particular @BanditNOLIMIT - he has a healthy and BB oriented diet that is excellent or at least that is my opinion.
Ask questions, nothing is foolish, if your just starting I am a less is more guy and try to get the most of food and my training sessions. If I was younger I might step on the gas a little more but I'm not competing in bodybuilding but training helps in so many sports pending you don't lose your flexibility and become a giant muscle. If that is what you are shooting for - go for it. Read @3bills log - that is a built/ripped guy who stands out beside anyone.

Wishing you the best but being relatively new, always think of the long term effects of what you do, moderation is key, but when I was younger I did mild cycles and stopped but that wasn't yesterday. We are spoiled today, back years ago it was near impossible to get PCT meds.

Best of luck!

lol don't use what I eat as a guide, lol.

I have changed up my diet because it was increasing my bp though.

As a rule i don't give cycle advice because in my cycling days our choices were very limited and our dosages conservative....but they worked.

To clarify a few points:
  • when you say 350 test twice per week. I assume you mean 350mg total split between two injections. IF yes, this is a great place to start for a first cycle. IF you mean 700mg test per week....that is way too much given your current physique stats above. On this alone, if you are a good responder (and that is part of the experiment), you should gain quality tissue if run for at least 12 weeks. If you don't know how you respond, 700 would be risky.
  • as for a second compound. I am not for or against. I would just encourage you to think of your cycles in terms of total mgs of anabolics. Most people do not have a plan and then the 2, 3 and future cycles needlessly get too big. The first cycle should be a total of 350mg per week. IF you are set on Tbol or Var (based on provided i would always choose var)...and the goal is 350mg per week. then drop the test to 200mg per week and add the 20mg per day of var. in my opinion, 350 per week test plus 20mg or greater of orals per week pushes your total to up to 500mg. I know the bro since says 500mg is the right place to start but that is out dated and simply not true. trying listening to some advice by john Jewet or Jordan Pererson. For my first cycle (35 yesr ago) i did 300mg test suspension per week and at 6'1 went from 175 to 205. Your second cycle should look at the smallest increment above 350mg needed to grow. People are too quick to go 500 to 750 to 1000...That is not sustainable or healthy
  • HCG on cycle. why? just introduces estrogen issues, etc. i would save it for PCT. There are good threads pinned on here regarding that,
  • Diet. you are tall and lean...so am i. Your metabolism is likely very high. you will need to track macros and weigh food carefully to maximize cycle. I assume you know your current maintenance macros? if yes the plan should be to add 200cal wait and see effect...when your stop gaining good weight, add another 200. You need to stay in a surplus with the right foods not junk loaded with fat and sodium or you will bloat.
  • You have not mentioned AI but i would not take one unless your BP start to go up or you get gyno....the only thing you need to monitor on your first cycle is BP. It might go up from the oral anyways and you need to know if orals do that to you.

Good luck.

Thank you! I appreciate all of the info. I read through it a couple of times. I'm on 300 mg test E/weekly, divided into three doses on a 1:1 ratio with Mast E. If I were to take Anavar, I'd keep it at 20 mg just to be safe. 40 mg might be overkill as I want to better gauge how I react to different doses and keep my lipids and liver happy. I'm also a believer in less is more and low and slow titrarions, barring certain exceptions, none of which apply to me. It's about finding that sweet spot and it's going to take time. I've seen guys rush into it and it never ended well in one way or another. Some were real dummies. One was saying how pinning has a bite. Guy was using 18 gauge needles to inject. Yeah, no shit that'd be painful. Totally misunderstood very basic instructions on which needle gauge to use. Of course the cycle he's told to follow was by a know it all who knew very little. Guy blew up. Fluid retention galore and then he lost gains. Kept maybe a third at best.

I am a rather fast metabolizer. Always have been. As a very, very firm rule, I don't eat processed or junk foods. They actually make me quite ill. I'd I was to get poison like McDonald's, I'd feel poisoned and ill for about 3 days. Processed food give me gastritis because I'm just not used to them and never have been, even in childhood and adolescence. Yes, I have an affinity for good pizza that isn't chained garage maybe once every 4-6 months. Simple starchy carbs and I don't mix well either. I'll get sweats. Asked my doctor and he said that my body's become so used to more complex carbs that the pancreas overproduces a bit of insulin, causing hypoglycemia. My wife's Asian, so of course there's rice around, but she's switched up to wild rice, red cargo rice, black rice or whole grains. I love low-fat high protein yogurt mixed with raw oats and sometimes a small amount of peanut butter in it as a dietary fat. Great for fibre. I'll usually chuck in a scoop of whey powder and a half scoop of bulking powder. Mix in some berries or Sultana raisins and it's a very tasty and filling snack. We eat a lot of leafy greens, especially kale and spinach. Broccoli and sugar snap peas are also regularly on our diet, cooked as minimally as possible to preserve nutrients.

This will take constant research, tweaking and adjusting. I think that once I find that sweet spot with the right compounds, I'll stick to that.

If you find you go hypo still once in a while, it may be linked to your caffeine usage. I get caffeine induce hypo. But if I eat carbs before I drink coffee I am fine.

Just putting this out here in case you think, hell yeah it was always after I drank coffee with simple carbs (like sugar).

Interesting you say this. I found its easy to get carried away at first when the strength comes on a bit more but something that kept me in check is focusing on finesse as i call it when i lift as opposed to the number. Then i find strength really doesn't increase that dramatically for bodybuilding purposes. For purely moving weight yea, things like dbol and androl will do that.

I'm not built for strength (picture zane or zyzz thats my type of frame) so finesse is all i have. But i cant complain, using less weight and getting an intense workout is safer and gets me to grow so win win for me.

As long as you look good, doesn't matter. I have never had a woman ask me how much I lifted when they were staring at my body, lol.

MY BAD....I was rushiing and posted this is the wrong thread...my apologies to the OP but all the advice is still solid.

Women? Shit, all i get is dudes looking at me 😢
Lol. You must be bigger than me.

If men are looking, I don’t pay much attention to that. I mean I do catch them looking, mainly my arms, but don’t keep tabs on dudes looking, lol.

I only really notice with the woman because they try and flirt (remember I’m not talking woman under 40, but im closer to 54, that’s young to me, lol)

In their 30’s moms seem to like me as well. Maybe figure I can pay for them and am still in good shape. It’s funny if you pay attention.
When on holidays, they will play with their kids a bit too much pretty much right in front of me, it’s like they are trying to show how good of a mom they are.

But those horney 50 year old woman, I gotta be careful around them. They grope me. In the summer, I bet once a week some 50 year old woman has to grab my arm. Sometimes they pretend like they are trying to fit around me in a tight area, but wrapping your hand around my arm and squeezing, lol. Come on. And they don’t care if my wife is around. She’s the one that pointed out how bad it was, I wasn’t paying attention.

We were out for breakfast about a month ago, and our 40 year old waitress commented like 5 times about what good shape I was in. It got kinda embaressing.

Honestly I couldn’t care less, not like I’m chasing down woman, but I gotta say, no matter what age it’s kinda flattering. I look at it this way, even an older average woman doesn’t want a floppy out of shape older man.

Truthfully I think this happens because I’m not a tall guy who is amazing looking. Just a bit above average, so approachable.

Just pay attention to subtle clues, I bet the girls are looking, and seriously who cares if the guys do? I could care less if I impress them.

Lol no I was just kidding. I'm nothing to write home about tbh. I stay covered up mostly in the gym and I dont have enough social interaction in the public for women to even really see me. But I'm big enough that the younger guys I work with ask for tips.

I hear you on the horny older chicks. My mother in law's friends at my wife's bridal shower had me thinking every single one of these broads wants to grab my arms or pecs. Come picture time sure enough whoever was close enough did😂

@Sorbate im sure they're looking, especially the chubbies. I've noticed it at times but next to being married when I'm in the gym I'm laser focused I basically forget about the attention. Keeps me out of trouble that way too.

I have zero intention to cheat. Not even a thought, so I notice but don’t really care. It does stroke my ego though, lol.

Who doesn't love getting checked out. I did like crazy before my cycle. Always good women who you knew were ladies on the streets and a freak in the sheets. When I'd worked in healthcare was when it was most abundant. I look young for my age (39; still young!) and people have said that they thought I was barely 30. If they looked at the stress lines, raccoon eyes with garbage bags and loss of skin elasticity, they may rethink that. It's still a nice compliment lol

It is very gratifying I agree. Until it happens when my wife is around. She gets mega jealous then it gets weird. Jeez i remember when we were dating i was natural back then, and waitresses or girls in public would flirt with me or check me out... It's a weird mix of feeling on top of the world and feeling mortified at the same time 😂

Back then I'd have guys ask me if i took anything because I have a small bone structure but i had 15 inch arms with little 6.5in wrists so I guess they looked bigger because of the contrast. I have to imagine girls noticed it too.

My wife never used to get jealous. She would point woman out all the time to look at. I didn't like that. Now I am stuck in a position where she wants to know what I think and I do not want to comment. My wife is a natural flirt, and she didn't care if girls flirted with me.

I think it bothers her more now, but I would bet its because she doesn't want to lose me. She doesn't get angry, but she gets quiet or mentions something off hand and we all know what that means.

I flipped a switch in my mind about 7 years ago. I do not look at other woman in the appealing way anymore. I get an ego boost, but never think of anything other than that.

Having the illusion of being bigger because of structure is great.

See I'm the type of guy that just says what's on my mind lol. Like telling her about sex dreams with Gillian Anderson after binge watching the X Files😂. I know she doesn't like it but whatever this is who i am, I'm not going to pretend I don't find other women attractive. That doesn't mean I'm out there looking to cheat or anything though.

I'm not a jealous person, I just don't see a reason to be, so being jealous is a turn off for me. But I've learned to live with it. I know she loves me and she knows other women find me attractive, she's just being overprotective. In her world it's just me.

Yea I'm happy I have a smaller frame with broad shoulders because once i fill out I think it will look really impressive. The aesthetic prettier looking physiques are the ones I admire the most so it works out.

I stopped being jealous after my first real girlfriend. That’s how I turned her off and why she broke up with me. Since then I figured if they don’t want to be me, then it’s not meant to be.

Good thing I’m not because dudes hit on my wife non stop especially when she was younger. It was brutal. She got hit on so much, that once she got older, and it didn’t happen as often, she missed it, where when she was younger she sometimes found it annoying.

But she was good about it. If some guy would say, “nice legs”, she would say “thanks” and keep moving along. The speed she walks, no one followed, lol. Sometimes for fun I’ll walk at a normal pace, then when she’s way ahead of me she gets worried turns around looking for me.

I remember years ago, she would be taking the work deposit to the bank, she would have like 20,000 on her, we only had one car then, only needed one car since we normally worked same time, same place.

She would be walking down the back alley from our house to the bank about 3 blocks away.
I told her, just put it in your jacket pocket and at the speed you walk, no one will rob you. Who’s going to think you have that kind of money on you?

They never did, lol. Man that was years ago, like in the late 90’s.

Sorry kinda got off on a tangent. Went downtown today, had a couple beer at a restaurant, it is beautiful out. I’m now going to sit on my front porch in the sun and drink about 6 more, lol.

Awesome enjoy👍

HCG on cycle. why? just introduces estrogen issues, etc. i would save it for PCT. There are good threads pinned on here regarding that,
Because if you take HCG on cycle, you actually never shut down endogenous production of testosterone during your cycle.

Your balls stay full. Your PCT is smoother.

If you take HCG after cycle, you have to try to get your body to produce again after it has shut down producing testosterone for a period of time, which is less ideal than keeping it producing the whole time.

Time on = time off minimum. Cycle length, break length.

Better yet, one cycle per year. 8 weeks min, 10 weeks max. ( if you want to minimize shutting down, or needing TRT)

Or at least this was cutting edge information 15 years ago!

Being on TRT half this goes out the window/ does not apply, and I have no clue !

I only did one cycle so far, 15 years ago. Some of the same folks on this board today were back in that thread to help me learn it all. But I used HCG throughout ( at a much lower dosage than you would at PCT)
I did 600 mg of Test E per week for 10 weeks. The recommendation at the time was 500, but the vial came dosed that way so that's what I did.

You could consider HGH, or IGF, during the off cycle time. That's also what I did. That won't effect your testosterone and will help you during the off cycle time.
