Does anyone know how Labour laws work. Basically im working 8 hours and normally only paid for 5 or 6. Im a service plumber so i go out on calls normally 1 or 2 hours each.. but I only get paid what I charge the customer. So I lose time in between calls and waiting for my next job. Pretty sure this is not legal. But I cant find the proper information to show them.. I am currently looking for a new job

Ok. Sorry. I am in alberta. I cant seem to find hard facts.. just rules on minumum 3 hours a day.. breaks after 5..etc

Called them up anf actually got an answer this time. I am suppose to have a shedule work time like 8-4..but he said theres not really anything in writing i can show them other than that. I thinkni will just find another job rather then cause shit

That is up to you. I used to make a living at causing shit.

That sucks man, seems like it’s piece work. Payed for what you do only. As a journeyman electrician I’d say fuck that shit, my time in between calls is a value also. I’d be moving on if I were you, lots of work in your field brother.

Ya exactly.. im fine with piecework.. but not at a normal employee wage..

Why not bill the customer travel time on the call. This is what we do. If they call you and it takes you an hour to get there you charge them the hour of travel.
Ya thats what we do. But I have to charge them travel time both ways. I still lose because I go back to the shop bwtween calls. If we we really busy I could go from call to call and actually gain hours in a day

That's a tricky situation if your a sub and your running all your own equipment out of your personal or your company vehicle then your only paid what you direct bill
Similar to alot of mechanic shops it's all run on book time so say book says 1 hr to pull a trans but you spend 4 hrs pulling you only get paid for 1 hr

If your running out of a supplied vehicle and partial supplied equipment then you should be on a set hrly rate from the time you pick up the vehicle to the time you drop it off

Minus what ever you take as a lunch break

You should look at piecework though sometimes it looks like less money but in the end you could be making more

If your not happy with your rates talk to the people your subing through most guy can work with you to pay you more

Also to have you thought of switching to new construction homes the economic crash is over and Alberta is booming again

New construction it's all piece work and set rates and pay our per house if your good at what you do you can make dirty good money
Especially if your hire a $13 hr helper the cheques fly in

Could try and start your own gig, small one man show, start with smaller jobs and see what happens skys the limit. I just wouldn't recommend naming the company cheapshot or anything along those lines

Im not sub contracting. I am an employee. Van and big tools like threaders and drain cleaning machines are provided. I have all my own power tools and hand tools. I also take the van home every night.. so thats a bonus. I think at this point I would rather just do commercial for a big company.. at least I know Im getting hours and getting paid.

And yes Treneth I agree cheapshot may be a bad name..lol.

I thought you were a sub yah man you need to have a sit down,
Labour laws in Alberta regardless of what you do is your paid for all time required by an employer so from the time your butt hits that driver seat till you get home you have to be paid

The only thing there not required to pay for is a 30 min lunch and if you quit or get fired because your occupation in same category as construction they don't need to give you cause and when you leave there not required to offer you any severance package

Even end of the year wcb hr submission claims they send in would not affect them
basically cutting hrs the only reason for them underpaying 2+ hrs a day is so they make more money by paying you less

And yes if your not a sub look into unionized commercial
Your first year is shit but after that your wages go up
But it's the same everywhere
My buddy does union iron work for the last 13 years and keeps telling me to come work with him
