This is so weird I'm an avid judo player until I got my hip replacment and I can no longer do it , I was my happiest on the mats took all the stresses of life away , now I find when I take my kids to taekwondo and watch I get so depressed that I can no longer practice martial arts , dont get me wrong I'm so happy for them my son is a natural, I know why I cant do it any longer . But I'm fucked up everytime i walk by the mats. And i know my body cant take the hard throws anymore or certain pivots . But i still get upset.

@Capemuscle its interesting that you bring this up.

My son started playing football this year and I miss playing. It’s been a long time but I feel a bit foreloarn when I see his games and practices.

Maybe try to get involved in coaching, I’ll be doing this during rugby season.

I thought about that as I love the sport and do hold a black belt in it but I feel like I have nothing to offer without getting on the mats and showing them how to exacute a technique, I wouldn't want them to think I was one of those book coaches, I like to teach by showing.

Sorry man. If you have participated in martial arts long enough it becomes a part of who your are...so when its taken away there is a void. I think about this tons as i know the day will come when i can nolonger participate in jiu jitsu the way i want to. For me personally this is tough because i am a very "hands on" teacher. I could not be a coach that stands around and the grappling arts are tough because to practice you really need a partner. If its not in you to coach (the way you want to), maybe you can find another art that allows you to train without putting your hips at too much risk? When i have a lower body injury and can't grapple, i do a little boxing - shadow box, hits pads, etc

@Oldguyjiujitsu , you hit it right on it is part of you , and how the guys are in your club it's a brotherhood, we teach all the young guys to protect your partner as you need them to train with , when you teach them something new or exacute a move the feeling is a rush it's better than any antidepressant. Your your right it leaves a huge void. Boxing might be worth trying.

@Capemuscle you could also try things like Kali. It doesn’t require as much lower body and can still be competitive

Kali depends on the style as most have Dumog which is a form of wrestling. Mind you it can be modified quite easily to not go to the ground and be almost like Chi Na.
Most of the guys I know in the Martial Arts have knees or hips replaced and after some modifications can continue to train. If you have access to any traditional Goju Clubs I would give them a go and concentrate on the Kata and Bunkai. Any Okinawan style can be quite good with hip replacements due to the height of the stances and the predominate hand like nature of the styles.
You are in Nova Scotia aren't you? Chito is big down there as is Uechi. Maybe not in your area though.

@Bagua happy you are active here. You are a wealth of knowledge.

I'm really getting interested in krav maga but not sure if I can do that

You’ll be fine. You just need to accept the fact and work with it instead of being depressed about it.

Fir example, because of my colon condition I cannot eat enough to be able to become huge. I wanted to become large so bad I actually lived in pain most of the time trying to jam in the food. Eventually I would end up hurting myself seriously if continued on that path. See I love training, and seeing my body transform become more like a superhero.
When I had to take time off because I couldn’t eat, constant pain it would make me depressed. Only hobby I have, I think, fuck I can’t do what I enjoy, life seemed a bit pointless, what am I here just to be a workhorse?

Anyhow is was mentally destructive, so I had to decide that I neeed to do what was good for me, not my fantasies.
So now I’ll be the ripped old dude. So now you should teach. Teach them the mental aspect of martial arts. How to be in control of their minds. Live thru the kids as they progress.

You have a point I love when I show a child something and they get excited about it and run to their parents and tell them , and they talk about me like I'm a ninja lol , you know what's funny the students never ask about my limp or even stare it's strange.

I bet they figure you got it fighting in some wonderful battle. Think about being a kid. You would have assumed your instructor got it in a fight, next thing you know your imagination would turn it into a Hollywood battle. You beat the bad guys, but took permenantly damage. ;)

You won't know unless you try. There is a fair amount of grappling in Krav Maga as Judo and Wrestling were pretty big in the formative years of the system. Once again it can be personalized.

@Capemuscle Have you thought of simply limiting your Randori practice to using a controlled Uke for your Tori strictly for demonstration purposes? That would keep you on the mats but also safe from being thrown too hard. You would have to have perfect technical control for it to be safe. It all comes down to how advanced you are.
It may be safer to stay within the realm of familiarity rather than start something new and have to adapt as you go along.

See getting old is the perfect excuse for @Bagua to teach us some stick fighting. We can all meet in the park and instead of tai chi we go nuts having a battle royal with the sticks. (That is what the dog brothers did right??)

Did you know the original Dog Brothers were all students of Dan Inosanto who wanted to test their nerves in a high pressure situation? I believe they actually did start in a park. Another trivia point with the DB's is they were turned down by the UFC because they were deemed too dangerous and bloody to sell. About 95 % of the fights at Gatherings go to the ground.
