Dealing with high bp

Sildenafil or tadalifil will have a very modest effect on lowering bp at best. Don’t expect wonders.

Fish oil at very high doses can also be somewhat effective for mild hypertension. There are prescription strength capsules out there. One brand name is lovaza.

Have you tried it?

Have family genetics high BP which any of the extra "goodies" puts higher.Medical meds di not help much even at max doses.Started hawthorn/Hibiscus tea[$1.30 a box of 20 bags at Bulk Barn]3 strong cups[20 min.steeped] with 1 scoop citrulline and 1 tbs of beet root powder 3x daily.Has knocked 40 points off my systolic reading--Diastolic[lower#] never a problem .I also use acupressure points at times

Just curious. Has anyone here with high BP in the hypertensive range (140?90) ever lowered it with just fish oil?
IIRC,Gondar did .

You are correct sir. Back on NM I lost some long posts due to not saving them before being timed/logged out so i got in the habit of writing in Word, I still have a few of them saved, below is one on this subject. For the sake of accuracy fish oil was the variable but I was (still am) also on very low doses of two other BP meds namely HCTZ(25mg/day) and Ramipril(5 mg = 2.5mg twice a day). Once I dropped the fish oil for a while to see what would happen and iirc my BP slowly creeped back up to the point where I resumed dosing after around 10-14 days.

"An important fact that seems to get missed is that although most will talk about the dosage in terms of what size of pills they take we should probably be talking about what dosage and ratio of EPA and DHA we are getting as that's what's doing the heavy lifting as far as the positive effects. From what I have seen this can have a huge effect on you bang for the buck between different products and vendors. Also when you consider that every gram of oil consumed is a gram of fat added to your daily total the quantity of the good stuff per capsule may be pretty important to some.

So I've been taking it for a few years at roughly this dose (EPA-DHA)4000-2000. That's 10 1 gram pills for the one I take. At this dose my BP was usually near the high end of the normal range - 140/90.

A while ago I tracked my BP for about 10 days at the drug store to get a baseline (140/90 ish, same as at the Drs office) then doubled my dose to 8000-4000 (20 pills). I made no other changes in diet or anything else. Seven days later my BP measured 120/80 which is at the bottom of the normal range and it has remained there since."

For the last year or so I've been taking ***12grams/day which total 5040 EPA- 3360 DHA for the Equate brand Walmart Omega3 product I use. Now I come in at around 110-115/65-80. I assume that improvements in food choices, supplementation and other lifestyle choices are the reason for the further improvement but I am very happy to have isolated what effect the fish oil has on me. A large part of my sup protocol is focused on CV health and includes stuff like Niacin, Citrulline Malate, Coconut Oil, CoQ 10, Curcumin, ASA, antioxidants etc

Edit - *** I forgot these are actually larger gel caps- 1200mg not 1000. So actual fish oil dosage is 12 caps or 14,400mg

What was your BP at when you started? 40 mm Hg is quite the drop!

I can always count on Gondar!

Yes good point when I say 3000 mg per day that is 3000 EPA/DHA

BP was 175-178/78--now generally 134/70 without pressure points and 125/68 with points pressed daily
I also mix my citrulline/beet powder in 10 calorie pomegranate/cranberry juice which further helps hypertension
Am a retired RN so very familiar with BP and also have a large cuff/monitor at home.

I worried about BP meds because I always get significantly weaker on them-Statistics say about 20% in older people
Also HCTZ s indicated in reduced muscle mass.

Well that is pretty damn interesting, thanks. Can't say I "feel" weaker at the gym but it does make me wonder if this is having a neg effect on mass. It's getting hard to tell what's causing what negatives as I age, that's probably not news to most of the guys in this thread so far though :)

Have you tried Citrullline Malate as compared to the Beet Powder? Seems to me it would be a lot more potent and better bang for the buck? I take at least 3g every day and 8g before I lift, probably in the top 3 of my fav sups for sure. Workout wise I like it for the pump and vascularity and love the health benefits as well.

I take 3 g before I lift for the pump, but interesting that you take it every day.

I take both 3x daily

Are you taking meds with it?

Ok, so i took BP this morning. Before Omega 3 (but on my BP med...won't go into before BP med) it was 132-136/ 75-80. After Omega 3 it has been 126-130/70-80. Today it was 130/80. My personal experience is that it consistently has helped me by 5 points on the top number. It is not massive, but i will take every point i can without going on stronger meds. (Coversyl is a very mild BP med and according to Dr has the lowest side-effect profile. )

I do use use 3mg Citrulline before workout...i may try it everyday. The trigger points are also interesting...never been a big believer in that type stuff but i do work a very high stress job (when not working for more than a week BP drops 10 points) so may try during the work day...no harm in doing a mini experiment.

My BP is pretty good for the most part usually hanging around 125-135/ 75. I know as I age it is going to go up. I was hoping to get some anecdotal evidence from the folks on the forum to the efficacy of using fish oil. It looks like it may be worthwhile to check out despite some of the recent literature against it.

Geezus I had no idea Ramipril did this! That's the BP med I'm on.

If you keep you diet, weight and exercise the same, i don't think the BP will necessarily go up just because of age. That said if you do choose to try Omega 3 (because its good for memory, etc not just CV) i like Jamisons Ultra Strength because you only got to take 3-4 per day to get the 3000 of EPA and DHA. They are pill for pill more expensive but you have to take way less
