Costco vehicle batteries

all this talk about block heaters and i didnt plug mine in. Fucking truck is frozen solid.
Running diesel oil and lucus oil stabilizer. The crank never stood a chance of passing through that shit.
Opps. Lol

We drove the wife's SUV all week because truck needs batteries.. On Thursday the wife forgot to put her extension cord in her car when we went to work. rough start for sure..

Where we work, our employer has plug ins for our cars.. We plug our vehciles in at work whenever its colder than -15... Co workers can not understand why we do this.. if its free electricty, having a warm block saves a lot of engine wear and your engine is warmer faster..

So many co-workers of ours believe you don't need to plug your car in unless it won't start.. So on those -40 to -50 days we are at work, I shit you not over half of our coworkers do not plug in because their cars start... Most drive newer gas vehciles, so they do start, but holy fuck you can't convince them you should plug in regardless if your car will start at -40 without plugging in.

Ive worked with many people up here where the determining factor when its time to get a new car is when it won't start in -40 without plugging in..

I always do with any battery.. its shocking how many come low fluid from the shop..

You would know, do batteries get fill at the factory or at the place of sale?
Most are maintenance free now as far as fluid.
Distributors are supposed to charge them every so often, but most dont.

Im not sure my block heater is even working. Last couple winters truck was at the lake in the garage, but wont fit through the door in my garage in FM.
Me and the wife just had to push the fucking thing out of the way to get the other car out of the garage. Hard to get it rolling. I had an olympic barbell and she had a piece of lumber and we got under the trailer hitch for leverage.
Fuck i hate winter!

lol.... thats rough..

Did you check the resitance on the cord to see if block heater is workig? I had one block heater all of a sudden die in one of my old duramaxes.. One day it didn't start right after being plugged in.. plug and cord looked fine, but voltmeter said no go..

Dont think i have a meter here. My good one is at work and my spares are in my garage at the lake.
Monday looks warmer. Got the car out of the garage so good enough.
Back on shift for 14 starting Wed and have company vehicle then.

I did notice when i went to get the car out that my block heater extension cord got unplugged.

You guys are talking about -40 like its a normal thing. G*ddamn thats cold. I get that maybe 1 or 2 times per year and its the worst days of my life.
0 to-10 is fuckin cold.
-10 to -20 is too fuckin cold.
-20 to -30 is fuck you its too fuckin cold.
-30 to -40 its just not happening, fuck yourself cold.

I dont know how you live like that. 3-6 months of southern ontario winter is already misery for me enough. Yall are real winter cowboys.

It's different for sure... Lots of pro's and con's depending on who you are.

I really don't mind the cold, even -40... But I do wish our winter wasn't Oct 15th- May 1st.. I'm not shitting you, I've seen lakes still completely froze over and snow in the forest on may long weekend here.. You do climatize... Once this -40 shit fucks off and its only -15, many people will be out in sweatshirts lol.... Even my young kids know this happens.. Son told me something like this in early nov when it was only -5 or so "dad it's really cold today, but I know its not.. Once it gets REAL cold, today will feel like summer and I won't even need a coat".

What I also don't like about the cold is that its really really hard on stuff... shit just breaks when its -40... I picked up my new batteries at the mechanic today and lol literally the desk person was non stop telling me how many blower motors, block heaters, batteries etc they have gone through this week.. Cold is also just hard on stuff in the way that parts don't fit right in -40 and it causes extra wear and damage..

And most of all, I dislike working on machines in the cold.. I tried to get my snowmobile started today.. it's parked in the yard.. wouldnt' start.. boost didn't help etc.. So I had to winch it off the trailer and drag it into the garage to let it sit in the heat for the night.. track was frozen, so I literally had to drag it against its will.. I couldn't just pull the trailer it was on into the garage because the dam jack on the front of the trailer sank into the ground and froze itself in.. I was too cold trying to deal with the trailer jack after 20 mins so I hooked on to the sled and drug it off the trailer instead.. So ya, I still need to deal with the trailer tomorrow.. It needs to be rewired and I should repack the bearings.. I wanted to do it in the summer, but I got busy fixing other stuff, now I'm stuck fixing it in min -20 outside..

My life will get immensely better when I am able to build our new place.. We are building a garage twice as big as this one so I can work in heated garage instead of freeze my ass off outside.

I changed the oil in the truck today after I replaced the batteries.. In order to do the oil in the garage, I had to drag the stuff in the garage outside to free the space up.. than pull the truck in.. I did the oil and greased all the drivetrain.. I'm happy to have the garage, but as the truck warmed up in the garage, all the ice and snow stuck to it melted and dripped down on to my face the whole time I was under it.. When I get a bigger garage, I can pull the truck in and park it there for a couple days to let all the snow and ice melt and dry..

There's a reason gas and oil guys get paid nice money.. Working in -40 outside isn't for everyone... Its just plain miserable.. I have had to work on vehciles/trailers etc in the dark outside in -45, but I understand why those guys get paid nice money..

Last year my trailer to haul water to my house lost a bearing.. And once I looked at it, I saw a shackle was busted as well.. It was one of those -40 weeks.. We haul all the water to our house.. if we turn a tap on, that water comes from a tank in the ground I fill up by hauling it with a tank and trailer.. Anyways, we were runnig out of water, so after work I would go outside in -40 in the dark (sunsets at 4pm) and work with a headlamp on the ground in the snow holding metal thats -40 until my fingers went number. then go inside, warm hands up and go back outside and repeat.. That;s a lot like oil field work in the winter, but all day long every day

Funny, all week it was cold as fuck... like -44 yesterday when I woke up.. Today is saturday and my day off work and I need to get stuff and it was all outside work... It was -30 and you just throw on your merino wool socks, PJ pants, than insulated coveralls, then sweater, then belaclava, then carhart winter coat, then toque, then 80$ pair of leather winter gloves and go outside for the day.. You just do it and once your outside, its not horrible..

I don't really like putting pictures up here, but about 5 years I was checking my coyote and wolf traps.. I know it was -35 to -45 that week.. I'd check my traps at night, so pitch back driving around on the snowmobile in -40.. My face was the only exposed skin I had.. and my face got cold.. but it didn't seem that bad after awhile.. than I got back to the truck my I had a spot on each cheek the size of a twoonie that was grey/white.. It didn't hurt, but when I touched the spots I realized they were literally frozen solid.. I shit you not, those 2 spots were hard as ice.. I took a quick pick and got home and warmed up.. Thankfully it seemed like no permanent damage.. maybe a bit of nerve damage?? I thought I was in the clear, but a week later I was checking traps in much better weather, but when I got back to the truck, those same two spots were frozen solid again.. rock hard.. I couldnt believe it, but once you get frostbite, you get it again pretty easily.. That was at least 5 years ago and those 2 spots on my cheeks hurt, go numb and just don't feel right as soon as I go outside in -20 stuff..

It sucks but you get used to it.
for me as long as my toes, hands and ears stay warm, im good. I dont normally wear heavy coats or lined pants.
I think it might be good for you. Its kinda like doing a cold plunge. Lol

Damn buddy, thats a hell of time to just deal with basic life tasks. I would definitely move. Even if i was making a large yearly income there, i wouldnt want to live like that. To each thier own. I get it that some people like the snow and dont mind the cold.
20 years ago or so i used to change oil on big rigs and the -20 days where pretty shitty. We were in heated large bay but opening both doors every 20min or so kept it brisk plus like you said all the snow and slush with salt falling on your head and face isnt fun. So i get the oil change life, but i never envied the outcall/mobile oil and mechanic service guys.
I work in the construction industry and i like to tell the guys when we bitch about -5 with sun, that this will be bliss when april comes around.

-30 at work is full thermal base layer, plus pants, sweater, liner jacket, insulated duck overalls and jacket, thick toque and ski face mask for me lol.
Im like the michelin man, but im warm and no wind coming through.

I definitely feel the cold since I started staying leaner all year as well... Very noticeable actually...
