8 benefits of Testosterone Replacement Therapy in over 40s

What is Testosterone Replacement Therapy? (TRT)

TRT is a form of hormone replacement therapy where testosterone is replaced to bring overall testosterone levels in the body up into the normal range of 270 to 1070 ng/dL. There are four main ways of administering TRT: injections, testosterone patches, skin creams and gels. TRT is usually prescribed to help remove the effects of male hypogonadism. Symptoms of hypogonadism include:

  • Muscle loss
  • Reduced growth of penis
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Osteoporosis
  • Low sex drive
  • Depression

Testosterone Replacement Therapy in Canada

A 2012 study1 found that one in ninety men in Ontario, Canada were being treated with a testosterone product. However, only about six per cent of the men had a conclusive diagnosis of hypogonadism – the condition when the body doesn’t produce enough testosterone. One potential reason for so many men who didn’t have a diagnosis of hypogonadism using testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) in Canada is because of the benefits that increasing testosterone can bring.

  • Improved mood
Low testosterone levels have been associated with a worse quality of life. Some of the symptoms of low testosterone include irritability, depression and fatigue. Research2 shows that for men who have symptoms of hypogonadism, trt can reduce depression and lead to an overall improvement in mood and well-being. However, it is important to note that men whose bodies followed a natural decrease of testosterone over time did not show an increase in depression.

  • Increased libido
If you have low testosterone, you might suffer a fall in sex drive. The parts of the brain that influence sexual desire contain androgen receptors, so if you do not have enough testosterone to activate the receptors then you might suffer from a fall in libido.

By increasing testosterone levels using TRT, you can activate these androgen receptors. This can be seen in users of anabolic steroids as well with many reporting increased sex drive during a cycle.

Furthermore, TRT has the potential to improve your erections. This is because you need to have testosterone to work on the receptors in the penis to help it trap blood and keep it erect. If you do not have enough testosterone then the process is impaired. However, erections also rely on nerves and blood flow being healthy so TRT alone may not be the best cure for erectile dysfunction although it will improve libido.

  • Lose fat and gain muscle at the same time
Testosterone is known for being an anabolic steroid with a great ability to help you build muscle. Studies3 show that for men with low testosterone TRT can reduce fat mass and increase muscle size and strength. In order to fully benefit from this it is recommended that you combine TRT with a strength training routine. While testosterone itself doesn’t directly burn fat, its ability to increases muscle mass can lead to an increase in your basal metabolic rate, which means you will burn more calories at rest. Competitive bodybuilders have understood this for years and many will use testosterone in the run up to a show due to the help it provides in losing fat and maintaining/ gaining muscle mass.

  • Increased muscle mass
Testosterone has been conclusively proven across multiple studies4 to increase muscle mass. It is not uncommon for individuals to gain 20-40lbs of muscle mass on their first full cycle of anabolic steroids such as testosterone. While the muscle gain on TRT will be slightly less due to lower doses of testosterone, TRT will still aid muscle growth.

This is because androgen receptors are found in muscle tissue so testosterone activates them to increase growth. The upper chest, upper traps and deltoids have an especially high concentration of androgen receptors and these areas often grow dramatically when individuals first start using testosterone. Moreover, testosterone can also increase water retention due to its ability to enhance glycogen storage capacity. For some individuals this can be beneficial as it can lead to bigger pumps in the gym and fuller looking muscles. With bigger pumps the tight fascia around the muscle stretches, which in turn gives the muscle more room to grow.

However, TRT will not be the same as a full-blown cycle of anabolic steroids and you will still have to put in the work if you want to change your physique. This means that you should follow a proper workout routine, eat in a caloric surplus to gain muscle and make sure to sleep enough. Without adequate sleep, training and nutrition the muscle building effects of TRT will be reduced.

  • Improved performance in the gym
On a similar note, TRT can improve intensity in the gym. It also boosts recovery allowing you to recover fully between each session. Moreover, due to the muscle building properties of testosterone, it can help increase strength as a bigger muscle has potential to be a stronger muscle.

  • Potential for healthier heart and blood
A healthy heart is important for providing the muscles and organs with the oxygen needed for peak performance. Testosterone aids in red blood cell production in the bone marrow and this is beneficial as red blood cells bind with oxygen to carry it around the body so with an increased red blood cell count comes an increased capacity to carry oxygen around the body.

Study results are mixed regarding TRT helping with heart disease. In the early 2000s small studies found that TRT only slightly reduced heart disease. However, a larger 2015 study5 of 83,000 patients found that men whose low testosterone was restored to normal through gels, patches or injections were twenty four percent less likely to have a heart attack and thirty six percent less likely to experience a stroke.

  • Your energy levels can skyrocket
One of the most common symptoms of low testosterone is fatigue and TRT usually reduces this fatigue. There are also reports of TRT causing a reduction in the ‘brain fog’ that can come with low testosterone.

While we do not know exactly how testosterone impacts energy, there are two main theories. One of these is that testosterone impacts the mitochondria, which produce energy within cells causing them to create more energy. Another idea is linked to androgen receptors. If the receptors do not get enough input then that can lead to fatigue.

  • TRT can be sourced legally in Canada
A key issue with taking anabolic steroids is that under Canadian steroid laws they are illegal to sell. This means that there is a lack of government regulation in the market and quality cannot be guaranteed when using Canadian anabolic steroid sources. However, being prescribed TRT by a physician avoids this problem. By sourcing testosterone legally you will be guaranteed a basic level of quality and purity as the testosterone will be coming from legal, established steroid labs. Moreover, by having a physician supervise the process there is less of a risk of potentially dangerous side effects going unnoticed.

Cumulative benefit of TRT

Overall, one of the key benefits of TRT is that many of the positive effects feed into one another. For example, having improved energy (7) can further improve gym performance (5), which can in turn lead to more muscle mass (4) and a subsequent reduction in fat levels (3) due to an increase in your basal metabolic rate. Similarly, improved performance in the gym (5), greater muscularity (4) and increased sex drive (2) can all contribute to better mood and confidence.

More are becoming open minded to it
At least where i reside.

Will just be a matter of time till the old closed minds retire though

People are closed minded to TRT because of feminism and the ubiquitous preaching of how "toxic masculinity" is a problem in society. I mean i'lI bet if I walked into a doctors office and told him I wanted to be a girl, he'd put me on some estrogen without a second thought.
