Always taken with a grain of salt-lol-I really believe that Poliquin's lab testing showed repeat training of a muscle every 5 days is best for most and the more gifted physiologically can train every 4 days .On any # of days rotation the number one factor in my mind is how hard[sets/reps/% of intensity] one uses-more intense = more recovery time ..I trained under Vince Gironda in 1975 in North Hollywood and it was full body 3 days a week or many who were novice to intermediate because they were not able to put the intensity in nor were they using big weights for exercises [which cuts into recup] Many of the more advanced in Gironda's -Larry Scott etc did a 3 day split and repeat for 6 days a week and many times a morning /afternoon split. They did not work in many cases but just ate -rested-grew..lol Vince almost killed me having me do 2 exercises per muscle x 6 sets each with 30 sec rest between sets and heaviest weight possible for 6 reps - I had not trained in 6 months before so brutal. The wonderful part-got to do triceps v-bench rope extensions with Lou Ferrigno who asked to work in --star struck-lol

Wow, some mega huge names here, cool post!

Did you visit the original Golds gym in Venice while you were there?

I’ll be honest...and this isn’t gospel, this is how my body’s responds ....I have noticed zero differences since following the anabolic window concept for years and years...now I merely focus on 6-7 meals of high quality food amen 30-40 grams of meat, fish or chicken, .and have cut back to one or zero shakes a day...and I look better now then I did in my 30s...

Now practically speaking , I usually add cardio and at most my workouts are an hour and 45 minutes, so at most I am eating an hour or slightly more after a workout...good protein and often a mix of simple and complex carbs....and i have noticed no changes composition wise...improvements actually.

Two things to remember...
The 30 minute window really came into fashion with shakes and post workout drinks....and often the magazines really pumping the anabolic window were in the back best interest of “cutting edge supplements”
Many of us old timers thought Hot Stuff, cybergenics, and MESO RX were also bodybuilding gospel.

The second is not everbodies bodies respond the same. My approach may not work for another lifter... I’m sure then cabable trainer said on here don’t have cookie cutter diets...they are constantly (if they are good, and the guys here are), are constantly tweaking their competitors diets....not everyone responds the same.
Basically I say fiction for me, but for those experienced and have done it both ways... well it’s fact for them.
Not playing both sides, just I don’t think honk there is a universal answer...but i do think it’s overrated provided you are providing your body with proper nutrients

Yes-trained there with Mike Mentzer and Casey Viator for a bit.Was less muscular then because I hitch hiked from Canada to Florida and then over to L.A. with no money. Many times went 3 days with no food.Sold my plasma for $8 a pint every week for awhile.Lived in a cliff cave just north of Santa Monica Gold's for a month while I worked at a gas station for $2.65 an hr to get a room directly across from Gold's .Hard times and good times.Membership cost me $10 for the month and the open Gym at Venice Beach was $12 for the yr-I don't look big but was as strong as they were still after 6 months with no gym and poor food supply..Strength seems to stay in general even now at almost 69 yrs..cheap poloroid camera-no cells in those days.like 43 yrs ago--lol

Very cool, back in the hayday! How long did you stay there? I hitched and bussed down to San Fran and LA with my foster brother from Vancouver when I was 15 and hung around for 6 weeks or so, it was a good summer.....good Lord if I could go back to 87 and do it all again I would in a heartbeat!

Wow, that was a hell of a post Randy. You got some very vintage stories.

Funny how those glasses and mustache on Mentzer is the hipster style of today!

This is correct because of the real protein factor.Hot Stuff was in fact hot for a time.Believe he moved his operation to an island in Costa Rica.

I visited Golds as a teen in 73.Hitchhiked and rode a train from Memphis to LA.Crowds of people at the fence by mid afternoon.Tough to find evidence of the original location on the net now.Joe made a fortune on that real estate, all luxury homes today.Believe this is where he got the money to launch his expansion.
