What’s your career!

Was very gorgeous loved working on the big lakes specially in the summer could pop in lake and cool off. Locals ruined alot of the main towns unfortunately. I lived on the outskirts on a small private lake but sold during covid because of the crazy market

I also breed dogs female is pure German rottweiler, dad is rottie/Sheppard (dad pure German shepherd mom is pure German rottweiler)

New here. I’m a journeyman lineman (Powerline technician) out of the Fraser Valley, BC. Been in the trade for 10 years now, and topped out for 4 years. Worked all over BC, up into Alaska, and down into Washington on various transmission projects, distribution projects, and storms.

I got a much clearer picture of what the role involves after looking into what a CNA does, especially how hands-on the daily care can be. The training wasn’t as long as I expected, and passing the exam felt doable with steady practice. If you’re drawn to patient interaction and want a quicker path into healthcare, it’s a solid starting point with steady demand and room to grow.

At 45 yrs old I decided to finally get a new trade.
Just yesterday I finished 8 weeks of school and wrote my Provincial exam for HET 1st Period. Did nothing but study and gym for two months. My training has been going great too, but thats a different story.
Now I stay with the same company but move over to the equipment and away from the light duty pick ups.
And since i have my auto redseal, i skip 2nd period, and most of the hour requirements, and go back to school hopefully in Sept for 8 more weeks and thats it. Hopefully have Redseal before the end of the year.
I have this entire year put towards this. Lots of saving and planning to cover two mortgages and keep up with the cost of surviving in general, and my employer did nothing for me, but it will be worth it. That extra ticket will make it so much easier to find work elsewhere, outside of Canada. Some countries actually encourage mining, and those machines need to be kept running.
I have seen lots of ads for mechanics in the Caribbean, other warm places.
Things are moving in the right direction.

Going to add that not only did i pass yesterday, I got one Certificate of Achievement for honours, I graduated with a 94% average, and another for Top Student (based on test scores)

Sharing this because I am a high-school drop out, and i didnt go to trade school for auto either, I challenged my red-seal 20 yrs ago.
Not to mention the decades of alcohol and drug abuse.

Point is I was nervous going in there, and everyone else is half my age, but hammered down and focused, and I kicked all those young fellers fucking asses!

Honest question, what are the kids like in college these days? Useless? Hard working? Lost? Driven?

Mostly pretty good attitudes. One guy that impressed me was a 21 yr old. Is an apprentice for the major crane and heavy load company, plus works in the bush for his buddies father, plus has his own side business installing high end security systems. 21 for fuck sake.
And then the kid that failed. Dressed like dollar store Kid Rock. He was one of three from 18-20 yrs old that somehow had 50 yrs experience each. Those guys talked a lot for the first few weeks disrupting the whole class. One day the instructor had asked them three times to cut it out, and they totally disrespected him and the rest of the class. Hard to pay attention when they are talking over the instructor all day, and that day was too much.
I lost it, yelled at them for a minute, and scared the fucking shit out of them.
Their faces were priceless. Eyes right big, eyes wide, like they just watched their puppy get decapitated.
They behaved for now on after that.
Three girls in my class. All put the effort in and did good.

Ya I've heard from local college that kids just aren't the same when they get there.. Said last 15 years has been a big step down in immaturity.. They blame it on highschools, highschools blame it on middle schools.. middle schools blame it on elementary schools and elementary schools I think get it right because they blame it on the parents. I admit as someone who works/has worked in all those systems, there is some HUGE issues in education that people refuse to address, but as a whole good parenting produces good students

I had a college instructor tell me it's not uncommon for a students parent to call/email the instructor asking for assignment extensions, ways to boost marks, to just give higher mark to their kid for no reason, tell them their kid says they are failling because the instructor isn't good etc.. He said parets did not email/call 15 years ago.. I would have been mortified if my parents emailed or called my prof asking why I wasn't passing.

It's not all terrible though, the college instructors I know say there is still lots of great kids coming into programs.. They tell me its the kids who worked for a year or two before heading to college that do much better and are more mature (surprise surprise).

Someone was telling me a story a couple weeks ago about a guy that brought his mother to a job interview.

Very good trade to get into young.
Get a few years under his belt, get a truck and he is all set.
I dont plan on doing it for a real long time (hopefully), but its something i have wanted to do for a long time.

A kid down the road from me couldn't actually go to work unless their mother went with them and hung out for their entire shift.. She was around 20 when she tried to get a job and the only way she could bring herself to go to work and not run away was if mom was with her..

I'm happy she's doing a lot better these days.. She's probably 27? Works full time at a hardware store.
