Working up north

I have zero experience with any camp work or working up north in rigs.
But a good buddy of mine just told me they’re looking for guys to come up and be well testers? Not sure what that entails. Is it a labour intensive job? Is the money worth it?
Just wanted to see if anyone is knowledgeable in that field to tell me if it’s worth going to work for short stints to make money.
I have a day job and can come back to it. So my general income will not depend on it. But this opportunity came up and wanted to hear from people that have experience.

Depending on your family situation and what it pays I’d say do it. Who cares if it’s labour intensive, there’s really nothing wrong with hard work.

If you could do stretches up north and put away money you could effectively set yourself up for life or 5-10 years.

Now if you are married or have a young family I wouldn’t do it. It’s like the expressway to divorce.

Yup... a great way to get ahead, but unfortunatey most oil guys I know get high paying jobs and instead of saving it/some, they just spend more.

Many oil guys making big money life pay check to pay check like the guy behind the parts counter at NAPPA.

It's possible to do camp work with a family, but it wouldn't be my choice. My wife wouldn't cheat on me like lots of oil wives, but me being away would cause her way too much stress.. She'd have to take care of kids, house etc..

What often happens if husband gets camp oil job, wife has to quite her job because her workload at home increases a lot.. So that high paying oil job isn't as great as it first appeared.

I also wouldn't give up the time with my kids to work camp jobs if I could help it.

If you are an intelligent guy willing to work hard, not quit, not call in sick and be on time, you'll have a job for life once you get your foot in the door.

Right now I work shift work. So my schedule is 4 on 5 or 6 off. And I usually just work all my days off anyway. So I’m not shy of working overtime. The money is actually good here and it’s pretty cushy. Only slightly better if I went and the cover food and board. But if it’s heavy labour and tough(on training and eating) I may just keep doing what I’m doing here. The only reason I would go up is maybe if it’s a dry month with no overtime and they are desperate for someone to come up for 2 weeks of work which is I could do. And I’m honestly just sick of management at my current job.

I am single. Just me and my dog. It’s more training and eating. But for short stints I’d suck it up to make some money.

I’ll talk to the guy and find out more info. I was just wondering if anyone knew what well testers did cause that’s the job title I guess 😂

I know some oil guys who lift and love camp life because some camps the food is amazing and they have a decent gym on site. Some camps check your belongings pretty carefully when you check in.. You can be fired for bringing steroids into camp

Your dog might make it difficutl if its a camp job. You'd need someone to take care of the pooch.

IF your young and single and it can get you ahead or even just a chance to check out a new career I would say give it a shot.
