SL33P .. what do you take to sleep? Like really sleep

I was on script zopiclone for years. 7mg split in half. Dr quit family practice, couldn’t get my script refilled…withdrawals were brutal. so I do not recommend zopiclone unless you’re absolutely desperate.

Tele-health Dr recommended Benadryl to kick the zopiclone habit. It worked but it was a hard 6 weeks. There were nights I was downing 20+ mg of melatonin, and two Benadryl just to fall asleep…not cool. Apparently the Benadryl isn’t habit forming but results will diminish with duration of use.

If you get on the benzo’s, be prepared for a wild ride.

Actually was just going through some meds I had and remembered Treazosin which is to slow heart rate but actually acts to calm the system down into a deep sleep. Apprently plays 2 roles but was not intended originally for that purpose. Many new doctors use it for people with serve night terrors so they sleep through.

I find if I'm not sleeping well and it's not stress or drugs or gear it's usually from over training. Or night shifts messing with circadian rhythm but yea usually I'm over training so I kick it back a notch.

I find this has been an issue with me. I often lift at night, once the kids are asleep and chores done. Squats at 9/10pm will keep me up all night, the CNS stimulation is too much for meds to overcome.

Zopiclone is like a tranquilizer with a 45min fuse attached. By 30 min i would see things reminiscent of the old windows screensavers with different colored lines and pipes flowing around when i would close my eyes. I found it very entertaining and would enjoy my screensaver time before blackout sleep.
After stopping, sleeping naturally became very difficult for a few weeks.

I find with zopilcone I wake up after 6 hours and can't fall back asleep. Like it wears off too early of something

Perhaps use zopilcone and mirtazapine, as the mirtazapine helps to keep you asleep. The zopilcone gers you there as stated above

Ive already mentioned Zopiclone here earlier. It's ok at 3.5mg but at 7.5 I'm too groggy the next day. It's a gamble if I can get back to sleep when I wake up in the middle of the night. I have some but hardly use it as its habit forming and can cause rebound insomnea when stopped. I keep it around just in case.

I've tried Mirtazapine and I hate it. I slept but I felt unrested, high, groggy, and tranqed the next morning. Same exact feeling as if I take benadryl, which I also never do for this reason. I still have a bunch of this stuff but I'll never touch it, I should probably toss it.

Hydroxyzine is another one that is prescribed off-label for insomnea but it has a similar effect, and sides for me, to Mirtazipine. It's a bit more tolerable but I'll never use it again. It's an allergy med and wifey has a big jar of it for that purpose, but clearly I'll try anything once.

The best thing I've found for sleep so far that I actually like is Quetiapine. It's an antipsychotic med that is perscribed off-label at a low dose of 25mg to help with insomnea, while a starting dose for it's intended purpose is 100mg+. It has a 20 to 30 min fuse, and when I wake up in the middle of the night to piss or whatever I can fall back asleep easily. Mornings are not too bad, a little groggy but nothing like the other options above, and once I'm up chug some water and eat something I perk up. Big upside is that it's not addictive, therefore not classified as a controlled substance, and rebound insomnea is minimal if you're prone to it, just taper off if needed.

I don't think we"ll ever find anything perfect. Unless you do the Michael Jackson cocktail were just all old and stressed. Proper sleep hygiene is a must though, no TV in your room, black out curtains, no alarm clocks or anything bright, no blue light 2 hours before bed, no food or drink 2 hour prior, stick to a routine of sleep and wake same hours even weekends or you'll be jet lagged. No coffee 8 hours before bed. Etc. I know this is really about meds but you can't forget the little things they're really important.
