Google says it will remove Canadian news links from searches in the country

This seems like a big mistake.

My company spent over a 1 Million last year in SEO to get higher visibility on Google, which on the grand scheme of things isn't really that much compared to what some pay. Meanwhile our Government passes a bill that would require Google to pay companies like CBC for their content to appear? I don't know if anybody told them, but that's kind of the opposite of how Google does business!

So canadian news companies are going bankrupt because we caught on to the government using it to control us, government loses control of us then places laws to restrict our news so Google looses money and basically gives all the power back to the news sources ultimately meaning all power back to yhe government? Sweet sounds like an awesome deal for us. Next using a VPN will be illegal and all online research papers will be banned from the public because we aren't qualified to understand the data on the results.

Oh no, without our liberal backed propaganda sources how will we be able to keep our heads in the sand?

Good riddance!
I know right? Didnt they just do us a favor? People will flock to places like twitter for their news feed where the narrative has been shifting towards something that goes against their propaganda.

The government will just give them more funding if they want or need it.. nothing will change that.

I had the same knee-jerk reaction everyone else did when I read the headline, then I actually read the article.

Basically Google and Facebook have been using news articles from news agencies for free with their search bots sucking them up, putting their own ads on the content and charging money for the ads they put on other peoples news stories. Newsies get angry about this, Governments step in, Google and Facebook get pissy, make threats, and then quietly pay a portion of their profits from advertising on those news stories to continue making huge profits on them.

Here's a chunk from the NBC news article.
In the last three years, several countries have enforced similar regulations requiring tech companies to pay local news organizations for their online content.

In 2021, Google agreed to pay French publications to reuse their content. In 2020, through Google News Showcase, it agreed to pay publications in Germany, Brazil, the U.K. and other countries in a deal worth $1 billion.

Google pulled its news service from Spain in 2014 rather than pay publishers, but it reinstated Spanish news last year after the country’s copyright laws gave news outlets more agency over monetization.

Thank you for looking into to this.

Another case of misdirection I believe. This is just one result of this new bill, preventing independent sources from publishing is the real problem. One of them at least. Not an "approved" journal (MSM like CBC)? Soon it will get really hard for you to get heard, it's already started.
Diversity, diversity, diversity! We need to pander to diversity and equality of outcome!
Diversity with the exception of thoughts and opinions that are not in line with the agenda.

I get the Facebook thing because they basically can create their own stories or edit them. But google just posts your link. I don't get why they would charge google. Gettin greedy.
What are other platforms other than google?

it's axctually quite messed up...

I tried to post a link about Quebec govenrment banning cell phones in schools.. Facebook wouldn't allow it due to the new laws.

So I tried to write "I can't post the link, but Quebec just banned cell phones in schools".. again, blocked.

I tried many variations to communicate that Quebec banned cell phones in schools, but even with no link, no wording got past the facebook police..

I fully understand the other side thought.. why the hell would platforms allow Canadian content if it means they have to pay the canadian government. I'd certainly say FU to Canada content as well.

It truly is just control and a money grab for Trudeua and his asswipes.
