I started taking a daily low dose asprin every day about a month or so ago. Is any other members out ther using asprin on a daily basis? I figured it would help keep my blood thinner, I dont live in an area wher blood donations are avaliable. Anyone see any issues with doing this long term? From what i read it can cause bleeding but that was with older individuals. Not sure if it would stress the liver at all......

I've been doing it forever and no issues at all, my blood work has always come back fine in regards to liver values.

I'm not big on NSAID's at all. This one is hard on your liver or that one is bad for your stomach lining but if I was hell bent on using them I'd take them with food.

Hi @Grey Beard - yes, I take a low dose aspirin at night usually 3-5 times a week. I was having stomach pain with no explanation but it left. I thought it was the start of an ulcer. I stopped the aspirin for a while and took fish oil daily.
There are a lot of studies showing the health benefits of low dose aspirin - somewhat of a magic medicine. Significantly less cases of specific cancers, less liver issues (all studies are posted in the health section) but like most medication they can be a double edged sword. They come with bleeding and ulcer side effects. Not for everyone and it depends on which doctor you ask - the health benefits outweigh the negatives for me but that is just one person's opinion.
If you take enteric coated low dose, hopefully you don't have an issue. From what I read, if I recall correct, low dose is very good for people who have had a heart attack and preventing another but not so much for preventing one to begin with. I may be getting it wrong. There is another study with thousands of doctors taking 325 mg tabs a few times each week and monitoring them over 20 years - worth reading. The anti - platelet action of aspirin is very long lived (huge half life for this benefit), at night daily is good for BP.
Regarding the liver benefits, I would love to know is this because those people don't take tylenol which is a known to be very hard on the liver? No idea but the results are staggering for liver benefits.

Per Funnyman - I also think you can benefit from fish oil as well. I take Carleson's fish oil 5000 mg of DHA/EPA a day and the periodic low dose aspirin. Fish oil, getting off topic, has a lot of health benefits including pain reduction for arthritis. Vets advise fish oil daily long before they ever tell you give your animal a NSAID like Meloxicam.

NSAIDS are hard on the kidneys, not as much on the liver so they are no longer prescribed on a regular basis long term like they used to be. At least the doctor should weigh the benefits/risks to kidney issues. They also cause bleeding issues. My relative was on a strong NSAID for 20 years after back surgery and it was a miracle for the pain but it created holes in his intestines. It was feldene and he had to stop - no discussion. He has other issues and was put on low dose aspirin but and put on another type of pain med.
Is that the correct course of action - depends which doc you ask but my relative is monitored regularly for all the meds they have to take.

All just my opinion, what I read, doctors I know......everyone has to weigh the benefits vs. risks and talk to your doc.

I'm a 5 hour round trip to the nearesst blood donation place and I force myself to make it in 2 times a year. That's all you really need to make a huge difference in your blood, for me anyways.

depending on your work you can do what I do...

I take the day off paid and say its a medicial appoitnment. I'm not lying.. my old GP told me "go to the city 2 or 3 times a year and donate blood, or I will write you a script to get your blood drained at the clinic".. He really didn't want to write the script b/c he didn't want that blood to go to waste...

See if your dr. will write you a prescriptioin to get your blood drained right at their office/clinic if you really can't make it to donte.

FYI , fwiw

I take it daily, 125mg
Cardiologist told me a a year or so ago that the association had now recommended against it cause of rise in strokes, I never looked this up for details.
@Goldenrod mentioned but I find worth repeating/rewording/adding to - It doesn't thin your blood technically, rather it makes the platelets less likely to stick together in clumps. Take it at night is better, can't remember exactly why but you know "scientific studies". Was told by an ER head that asa has about a 4 day effect on this action

Total amount of fish oils is not the appropriate target, shoot for DHA/EPA totals. Those both affect different things and deserve some personal research IMO. I personally take more FO than anyone I know, partial reasoning is I could be eating a wack of coldwater fish instead

Interesting comment on the 4 days. I don’t take aspirin but my buddy a dr says that to mitigate risks he recommends aspirin EOD.

Agreed for sure. For more context this was said during an ER intake.

Her question (s) : do you take asa daily?
Answer: Yes but may have missed last dose which was yesterday
Her: That's ok it protects you for 4 days

I'd assume less protection over that time, EOD sounds like good advice to me. If it ever started noticeably bugging my gut I might drop to that. It might already be the case, my guts arent perfect that's for sure so it may well be contributing

Hey @Oldguyjiujitsu - if I recall correct and I could be getting it messed up, the anti-platelet action is 4 days, BP protection if taken at night, anti-inflammatory benefits etc. require daily due to the half life or at least all the info I read referred to daily usage. I'm sure it is like Vitamin C, if there are health benefits to be grabbed using it a few days a week would be better than none at all.
@gondar1 - I had stomach issues and was convinced it was the aspirin. I had to start taking Tecta it was so bad. The pain went away with Tecta in a few days and I used it for a few months. Tecta is a great drug but Proton Pump Inhibitors come with their own risks which I read about here and the internal medicine specialist warned me about. I stopped and the pain never came back. Started the aspirin again and it has never returned. Not exactly scientific but I don't think it was the aspirin.
