Hi
@Grey Beard - yes, I take a low dose aspirin at night usually 3-5 times a week. I was having stomach pain with no explanation but it left. I thought it was the start of an ulcer. I stopped the aspirin for a while and took fish oil daily.
There are a lot of studies showing the health benefits of low dose aspirin - somewhat of a magic medicine. Significantly less cases of specific cancers, less liver issues (all studies are posted in the health section) but like most medication they can be a double edged sword. They come with bleeding and ulcer side effects. Not for everyone and it depends on which doctor you ask - the health benefits outweigh the negatives for me but that is just one person's opinion.
If you take enteric coated low dose, hopefully you don't have an issue. From what I read, if I recall correct, low dose is very good for people who have had a heart attack and preventing another but not so much for preventing one to begin with. I may be getting it wrong. There is another study with thousands of doctors taking 325 mg tabs a few times each week and monitoring them over 20 years - worth reading. The anti - platelet action of aspirin is very long lived (huge half life for this benefit), at night daily is good for BP.
Regarding the liver benefits, I would love to know is this because those people don't take tylenol which is a known to be very hard on the liver? No idea but the results are staggering for liver benefits.
Per Funnyman - I also think you can benefit from fish oil as well. I take Carleson's fish oil 5000 mg of DHA/EPA a day and the periodic low dose aspirin. Fish oil, getting off topic, has a lot of health benefits including pain reduction for arthritis. Vets advise fish oil daily long before they ever tell you give your animal a NSAID like Meloxicam.
NSAIDS are hard on the kidneys, not as much on the liver so they are no longer prescribed on a regular basis long term like they used to be. At least the doctor should weigh the benefits/risks to kidney issues. They also cause bleeding issues. My relative was on a strong NSAID for 20 years after back surgery and it was a miracle for the pain but it created holes in his intestines. It was feldene and he had to stop - no discussion. He has other issues and was put on low dose aspirin but and put on another type of pain med.
Is that the correct course of action - depends which doc you ask but my relative is monitored regularly for all the meds they have to take.
All just my opinion, what I read, doctors I know......everyone has to weigh the benefits vs. risks and talk to your doc.
