Morning,
My Alpha passed away a while ago and I have a young Bull Mastiffe that is not fully protection trained, but is a wonderful part of the family and will learn to release on command. Break in and he will take you down, but no guarantee when I tell him to stop - he will. Hence, in training that is the main focus right now.
I love Bouviers, but it is hard to find quality breeders unless you want to go to Quebec or BC (I am in the Atlantic Canada). Bouvier Des Flanders are my favourite breed as they are large, bright, curious, fearless, and have a wonderful sense of humour. I will drive and will not fly my dog in, as it can be traumatic depending on flight changes, the people handling the puppies, time of the flight, and change their natural traits. Hence I will drive so am working with a breeder who is well known in Quebec.
I have been talking to a man who breeds Giant Schnauzers in NB (closer) and is very well known with top Schutzhund dogs. He has no red flags, one litter a year, and a huge puppy ownership form with references / your vet, etc. which I respect. The male is a Schutzhund 3 and the female is a schutzhund 2 (advanced working dogs). Meaning they are working dogs who excel at tracking/obedience and protection. These are top working dogs, not as big as Bouvier but his larger dogs are 100-105 lbs and excel in protection. They can be a handful due to the energy / working requirements - training is not an issue as I do it myself plus sign up for life long learning which is once a week for their life, but if one walk a day and one training session with some playing is not enough - not the dog for me. I train protection with a friend who is not scared of dogs and trains his German Shepherds for protection too. For example - a Malinois is always ready to go and literally never stop. I love the breed and their agility is unmatched hence why they are special forces and police dogs, but you better be prepared for 2 hours of daily hard exercise, and training or they will exercise themselves.
If you don't know what this breed is - https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/giant-schnauzer/
We have enough fur, and have always appreciated the non shedding protection / herding breeds which the Bouvier is as is the Giant Schnauzer.
Anyone here have one? I am going to meet two in this Province next week to get a feel for the dog breed.
Herding makes your dog natural protective of the pack, they tend to be larger as they have to fight off prey like wolves, and love to work/learn.
Not a popular breed, curious with all the people here is anyone owned / owns one.
thanks
