I take melatonin also.. I used to use it all the time, but stopped. Recently I've been using it again, but this time around I feel really groggy the next day.. Trying to figure out how to use it and avoid the grogginess
What dose do you use?

I find everything in the stores is dosed way too heavy.

I tried melatonin a while back but it didn't do my sleep any noticeable good. From what I remember it is one of those things that is only helpful if you are deficient to begin with and it only takes a very small amount to get the job done. From memory it only takes 2.5-5g at most, I hear of people taking 10 times that or something but I believe that is a waste.

I'm not sure if that is why AB is asking but perhaps the answer lies somewhere within this info.

Yes exactly that.

I was taking way too much when I first started supplementing with it (10mg/night). Was super groggy the next day. Did some research and actually got away with using 1mg/night.

I work nightshift and as such it helps a lot though I actually haven't used it in probably 3 months as I noticed that when I didnt have it, it took a lot longer to fall asleep.
 
Figured I'd toss myself into the mix

-2 mutli vitamins
-2g vita C
-400 iu E
-8grams fish oil (really helps with lipids)
-Q10- forgot the dose
-alpha lipoic acid- again forget the dose
-2000 iu'd vita D
-b complex

Recently I added
7grams taurine
20-30 grams glutamin
5 grams creatine ethyl ester.

I find the tarurine and glutamine really help with recovery, fullness etc... for many years when I was yougner I took 7gr taurine and 40 grams glutamin EVERY day.. Everytime I stop taking it and then eventually start up again I wonder why I ever stop.


I should add, I take digestive enzymes with every single meal. I seriously think anyone who consumes high amounts of protein or just food in general should take digestive enzymes.

I realise @ABMonkey - this question was sent to @animal-inside but I will chime in because I use it for its massive health benefits and sleeping help. i take 10 mg a night but in the slow release so over 8 hours the 10 is released and I am not at all groggy. My dog has a serious autominnume disease in his eyes and I treat it with melatonin and the vets don't understand how a disease that can't get better is - it either stops or prgresses to blindness. Add, its one of the most powerful antioxidants for free radicals, etc.
My dog has Pannus and none of the steroid drops work so I researched holistic medicine - he get vitamin c,e and melatonin 10 mg a night. One eye is now 100% which according to the optomologist is impossible and his bad eye is 50% better.
amazing liver protectant but I'm blabbering - I take 10 mg and it took a few days before any grogginess went away. Regardless, I would take it for the health benefits.

I take 5mg sublingually.

When i used to take it several years ago, I know the tabs were 3mg sublingiually. Maybe my dose is just too high? Wife bought me the 5mg tabs..

I just realized my issue could probably also be at what time I'm taking it. Last night i took it at 9:30ish and I don't feel groggy when I woke up at 6am. When I usually take it its closer to 11 and still waking up at 6..

I deffinitly find it helps my sleep though. I rarely dream unless I take it which tells me my sleep is probably deeper and more progressed in the stages of sleep.
 
like anything - start slow 1 mg. Jesus - the natuopath books i have say to take considerably less. 1 mg never worked for me to I went to 3, and then 5 - 5 helped from me from 10-2 so i bought dual action 10 and it works great.
If your bored - you will see docs are using it to eye disease is humans with no sides - drops instead of steroids.

Gaba works better for me. Take zma with gaba before bed. Also you dont come dependant on it.

i can stop melatonin and do regularily - no physical dependence and I still sleep but I sleep better with it. More than anything else, it prtects your liver better than super high doses of vitamin e and NAC and is a potent antioxidant. I posted that study on here somewhere. soon when people try to or accidenty overdose on tylenol - melatonin will be part of the protocol to save the liver.

Are you using extended release or immediate release?

I have taken GABA before when I need to calm down, but not for sleep.

If I have a really good work out early in the morning and I need to go to work for the day right after, I would occasionally take GABA.

I take GABA before "family functions" with the inlaws. I find it keeps me calm.
