Don Cherry

They very well could of made a big mistake in firing him. Most of the people aged 30’s and bellow that are “offended” by this don’t pay for satellite or cable. Even I just have Netflix. I would hazard to guess 90% of the offended party doesn’t even have an interest in hockey and probably wouldn’t watch him anyways.

I would even go as far to say the majority of his shows paying customers probably share his views. If they don’t lose enough to a boycott, most would probably follow him to another network if he gets picked up.

The dude never wore a suit more than once.. Once he wore it, he auctioned it off and gave the money to charity.

Fuck the network that fired him.. He made them millions upon millions with coaches corrner. They knew the money he made them was based on him being opinionated and willing to state whats on his mind wether or not the net work agreed with his opinions. Its just shitty to hire him for the soul purpose of letting him rant and rave, then fire him for the same reason.

Agreed to all of that. I've heard a bunch of stories about his quiet philanthropy and to me his character and intentions are beyond reproach Mr Cherry will be fine. He is well loved, seems healthy and has tens of millions in the bank. At 85 who can ask for much more.

The societal issues are what gets me inflamed.

He didn't really apologize at least. I don't think he is gonna take back what he said but instead focus on the fact that he meant "everybody" which of course includes "you people ... that come here". Sounded to me like he was mostly sorry about what a pain in the ass it turned into.
 
This is why more and more I put my head in the sand and stay in my little corner of the world.
 
Didn’t they want don gone because of his cannabis company as well?

To think it could have gone something like this -

Man - "You people love — you, that come here, whatever it is — you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple of bucks for a poppy."
Person that came here - "I did, I've been wearing it everyday"
Man - "Awesome! I appreciate you showing your support for our veterans and all those who suffered for us"
Other Person that came here - "No."
Man - "Well that's your choice, I just hope you are aware of the sacrifices our veterans and others made so you could have that choice"
 
Thing is he says you guys all the time. Yes he made a mistake and I truly believe he is not racist just making a statement of truth. Is is racist if its true?

I guess that depends on what definition of the word you use eh?

BTW I've been running around using the term "you people" all week, nobody has raised an eyebrow except my friends - who laughed. I'm positive it's not the term or what he said that is the problem, people are just getting excited because it gives them a chance to be outraged, virtue signal or whatever.

I have a transcript of exactly what he said on my phone. In every discussion I have had about it where the other people are anti-Cherry has turned into me saying "he never said that, you are projecting and making assumptions"

Where did he say "immigrants?" he didn't, in fact the way it reads is like he is talking about anyone who came to Mississauga or downtown Toronto from somewhere else.

It's racist! they say. Ok lets assume he did actually mean immigrants. Is "immigrants" a race? "Immigrants" are people who moved from one country to another. I would bet a million bucks that there have been Caucasians come to Canada from at least 50 different countries. All immigrants. Probably true of every race on the planet.

The man is annoyed that everyone don't feel the same way about poppies as he does. He is particularly annoyed about the ones who he thinks should be more grateful because he feels they have gained something by coming here. This shouldn't be a big deal.
 
Many people have come to take a free world for granted .They don't understand that it cannot be taken for granted.

Yep, the more times I hear it, the less I hear anything wrong with it.
Mind you you can bash white boys all day long and it’s ok, lol.

Also a lot of immigrants are sticking up for him, but since most are white, they get dismissed because they don’t count.
 
Ive watched 2 old rememberance day broadcasts from coaches corner. One was 17 years ago. In both oth them he uses the term you people and says that we should all be wearing poppys

Don Cherry lost me years ago when he said we should be following the Yanks into Iraq in 2003. He reminded me of the old guy who was all too willing to send young men and women to their deaths in foreign wars that we have no place in. He should have stuck to hockey. At least if he stuck to hockey, his irrelevance would have ended him long before his comments on politics did. Players in the NHL wear visors, helmets, block shots and know each other as comrades. They talk. They sue for settlements on brain damage for which Mr. Cherry called them "pukes" and subsequently apologized. He made his money grandstanding on a game that hasn't been played since the Oilers took their first Stanley Cup in 83/84. The game evolved, Mr. Cherry didn't.
Why did Rogers drop the 7-second lag that used to be on his broadcast or was that the CBC? He has been getting away with offensive comments for quite a while, and not everyone sat back and chuckled.

He said he died "too with them"? My good Lord! He wore a Legion Blazer. Sort of.. His Poppy was not standard. It was embroidered. I am a Member of the Legion. This is the response of the Legion. "Mr. Cherry’s personal opinion was hurtful, divisive and in no way condoned by the Legion. We do remain appreciative of his passionate support for Veterans."
The least he could have done was wear a Poppy that gave two pennies to the Legion. The Blazer is this.
