Had to make a choice at work.

So we have been really busy at work, and hunting season is fast approaching and truthfully I’ve been dreading it happening.

The butcher and I have been running full out for over a year, we have another full time guy helping us out and we are still just getting done.
The shop is out of room, we have to rearrange to get work done, which is wasteful and time consuming.

For about 3 weeks I’ve been going over in my mind if I was going to cut game this year, i mean we would jam it in, we are resourceful. I usually do about 160 deer, 90% of the guys have been customer for a decade or more and I didn’t want to let them down because they love the job we do.

Last night I was in my garage, I’m renovating it, insulating the ceiling, putting in a heater and so on, I’m looking at my workout equipment, and got a bit depressed. For 25 years my training has taken a back seat to work, every hunting season I watch all the muscle I build for the year melt off while I work 80+ hours a week. (Normally 8 am till 2 am 6 days a week, sometimes more).

Now that I’m a year from 50, I’m thinking, how much more time do I really have to get good gains before that’s over, should I process game again and wait till next year?

Honestly we do not need the money, cutting is low profit, on a $75 deer by the time I bring it in, talk a while with the hunter, cut it, call a couple times to get it picked up and so on, I’d bet it’s only $15 profit. Then we need to deal with an overflowing cooler and freezer, people not picking up for a couple weeks and so on.

Well this morning I looked at my butcher and asked him if he really wanted to cut deer this year (he’s a great worker, all about the shop) he said not really, I went up to my wife (who does the books) and asked her if she would mind if we didn’t cut this year and only took meat for sausage. She tells me that she is happy I decided not to cut, because they are already really busy up front and don’t have time to wrap really. She says, why don’t you just advertise meat packs to make up the difference.

So I made my decision, not lightly either, I honestly feel bad for the guys I’ve been processing for for a decade.

But the silver lining was when the wildlife officers walked in again to check to see what I had (last year they checked me weekly, eventually I told them if they didn’t leave me alone, I’d stop processing game and give the hunters their phone number), I told them I wasn’t cutting anymore, pointed towards the sign I made, and told them they could check my notice on Facebook. The poor guys almost looked defeated, then asked me who else was cutting. I’m thinking that’s your job, figure it out, lol.

So screw it, I decided that training was my priority this year, this year is for me. My butcher went out front and told my front end supervisor there was a god, we were not cutting this year.

I feel weird, the businessman in me is like, never miss an opportunity to make money, but the 49 year old in me is saying, you going to donate your whole life to work, lol.

Anyhow just wanted to get this off my chest.

You already work hard @Sorbate and have built a solid business and many loyal customers. They will understand that you need a break. Take care of you..."the business man" is only one piece of your identity, it does not define you. As a fellow 49 year old, its ok to focus on you a bit. Plus it sounds like your staff and wife strongly support the decision and are relieved you made it.

Now stop slacking and hit the weights....i am way ahead of you this year....our informal contest is on my friend, i will start posting progress pics soon to annoy you LOL...i too have had a few set back but being my best by 50 keeps me focused.

Love this brother.

As a business owner myself, let me ask you this - how much WOULD you need to charge so you would be HAPPY doing that work?
Why not charge THAT rate and help a FEW guys? Tell them it’s a cash price now too. Bet you’d be surprised a few people opt in.
BOOM GEAR MONEY BONUS! ;-)

...incidentally I found my life quality lower a few years ago. I decided to increase my rates across the board by over 20%. Keep in mind the economy was SHITTY then too. Wanna know what happened? MORE clients chose us! My fees were now more in line with THEIR perceived value of my service and my business BLEW UP!

It’s just your mindset my brother. Get paid what you’re damn well worth. Sounds like you’re worth a LOT!

Good call brother. People need to focus on them first. Unfortunately for me I had my mom and dad pass early and it really steered me in the family first direction and not to work more then I need to. Not worth it. Congrats bro

If you want to know the truth, no amount of money would make me really want to cut game. I think I’ve hit my limit.

I bet out of 120, 20 animals are in great shape, the rest has hair, dirt, leaves, blown apart parts. About 25% forget to remember to leave a tendon on the back leg attached to hang it, so now it’s on the floor in the way.
Others think it’s a great idea to 1/2 or 1/4 the deer and that makes it a bitch to bone especially when they miss the spine.

The best are the ones they cut into limbs, so now you have to struggle holding onto little limbs, boning as fast as you can and trying not to cut yourself. A normal 15 minute boning job now takes 25, because you have to be careful, and now the fur and other shit is spread all over everything, lol. During hunting season there isn’t spare time to fuck around, every minute counts.

Then you get the guys who think you stole or wasted meat. I had to start taking pictures of the mess they made shooting the shit out of them. Why didn’t I get so much, “well you did blow out both front shoulders, but before you did that, you blew out one leg and it’s asshole shooting it in the ass when it ran away after you missed the first time, lol, sorry are you made at me now.”

Or the itty bitty 25 lb ones covered in dirt and fur, lol. The tiny dogs always are covered in shit. Then I get a, well it looked bigger, and I’m thinking, when? Oh when you were looking into the sun shooting uphill, bwahaaa.

The best was usually when someone brought the deer in covered up in plastic or cheese cloth, it was the dirtiest of them all. I guess they didn’t want me to know, lol, I’m cutting it, I’m going to know.

The worst is we are packed to the gills and guys take over a week to pick up. I’m fine with a week, but way too many leave it for 2 sometimes 3 weeks.

I’m sorry all the years of bad hunters have really jaded it for me.

For years it was my goal to make enough money that I didn’t have to cut game, but for over a decade I didn’t have to, but I did feel bad for the guys that love the job we do. Truthfully if it wasn’t for them, I would have stopped along time ago.

I posted it on Facebook and one hunter replied with a ‘nope’. I guess I’m not allowed, lol.

Oh and as far as cash money, I don’t need game for that. Actually getting cash money in my business is really simple. I do so much custom smoking for farmers, other kill plants, if I really wanted it, I could easily get a few thousand a week without trying. I don’t need game for that. Plus I have way too many staff, I never cash customers out anymore, I’m too busy running in the back trying to keep up, lol.
I find cash money is a waste, you end up blowing it on stupid purchases.
There is better legal ways to save on taxes. Write offs are a wonderful thing.

Good for you in raising your prices. It is true if you price too low compared to competition you scare people off.
I have always told my wife I won’t devalue my product by charging too little. Now my store isn’t overly expensive, we are pretty much in line with the grocery stores, but our quality is by far better.

Yeah I’ve been on a bit of a tare at work lately. Working 7 days a week.
I had advertised effectively before covid and we didn’t get any slow down to just relax a bit, then covid hit and seriously business increased 100%.
It was fucking killing us. I paid bonuses, doubled staff. You could see the drain in their faces, but they pumped it out.

Truthfully I’m tiring of killing myself all the time, just to get some asshole come in power and take more from me in energy costs and so on. I truthfully have everything I need, am not really wanting for more, so the tough grinding work I’m going to reduce and do the business that is easier because I’m set rup for it and is more profitable.

Game is 6 weeks. I could advertise meat packs, and over the course of a year recover the money lost, without all the headaches and the overswamping of my space.

Hey question. If I do an open concept ceiling in my garage, the wiring that is exposed in the ceiling, does it need to be in conduit/bx to be code?

Picture posedown next August? Lol.

Truthfully I’m not really sure what my goal is. Bulk and get big, or get ripped and stay smaller?

Mainly bro I’m happy you’ve built such an amazing and successful family business. Most folks don’t understand how hard that is. You sound like you’ve mastered it and that’s truly something to celebrate. Today I celebrate your achievements. Kudos! Enjoy taking YOUR hunting season back!

I mastered the ability to fake it till I make it. Honestly I have no idea what I’m doing, but I just try really hard, lol.
And I’m not really kidding. I’m a very good worker, but lack at being a manager.

Good for you @Sorbate. After reading this thread what I find astonishing is how many hunters cannot process their own meat. Myself I am not a butcher by any means. Chef by trade. I had the "old school" cook TQ3 OJT (Canadian Armed Forces) booklet from the late 70s early 80s, we had the butcher chapter. I can hold my own. Prepping, traveling, stalking, killing and processing the animal is all part of the hunt experience. Completely blows my mind.
